Rooting your phone allows you to remove bloatware from Cricket/MetroPCS.
Icarus is a custom MOD with the bloatware already removed. It runs faster than your stock 2.1 will with the bloatware removed.
CM6 is yet another custom MOD based off of 2.2 and runs faster than Icarus.
CM7 is also a custom MOD based off of 2.3.

Some people like Icarus, some like CM6, and some like CM7. I prefer CM6 but you will need to try each one and decide for yourself.
