What carrier are you on and in what country?

Mind testing out N64oid, NDS4Droid, FPSE and PSX4droid to see how well the emulators run on it?

Is your S2 locked to orange, assuming you took an orange contract out on it?

I have one coming on T Mobile and hoping it is unlocked. T Mobile are selling the phone till June so it should be.

Is the Galaxy S 2 coming to Orange in the uk do you know? I know it is available thru phones4u on orange, but I can't actually find it on orange shop website. Thanks

Ian

im not sure what carriers it is being released on, however my phone isnt locked to orange...thats because samsung gave me a sim free version direct. it isn't released in shops until the 1st of may

2 of my most biggest concerns that affected the current galaxy phones

-GPS & that lag rfl file system. Are they both fixed this version?

Ditto on the GPS. How quickly does it lock? Accuracy [with navigation]?

FWIW, I believe the filesystem is no longer a concern!

Did Samsung tell you this was a final retail model? Can you take some 1080p videos outside and inside and upload the unmodified mp4 files to a filehosting site like mediafire, megaupload, etc.? You don't have to do long clips, maybe just 30 seconds of panning around with the phone in your hand or just walking around. Would appreciate it. Also please say something while you are doing it, to test out the microphone. 720p is also suppose to be smoother/less noisy so any indoor/outdoor videos shot at 720p would be welcome also.

Idk what it is but UK accents are amazing lol. Anyways, I'm US bound and it'll be a minute until I have my hands on one.

I am not to worried about the Gameboy emulators :P

I am curious how some of the high end ones work.

Have you got one on T-mobile UK? my contract ends on 6th so am trying to get an SGSII as soon as possible.

:D

I'm gonna ask what is most probably a rather silly question :o, but since this will be my first android phone, i'm still new to android itself :)

Here goes: Is it possible to connect the SGS 2 (or any android phone, i guess) via cable (eg a usb cable, be it mini or micro), to a pc and download apps off the market that way, thru the computer to the phone, rather than connecting the phone directly to wifi? Like the iPhone can with iTunes, it can do both?

Wifi isn't always available where i am, but i do have access to a computer which has internet, via a LAN cable and a router. (Which is probably wifi capable , but i've no idea how i'd go about setting that up :o)

Thanks in advance, and i apologise for sounding a bit thick.

Ian :)

Well, yes and no. :)

If you can score the app package file itself (someapp.apk) the you can connect your phone via USB, copy it over and install it (tap, or use a 3rd party file management app like Astro, ES File, etc.). Note that there needs to be the option to 'Enable Non-Market Apps' apps on the phone (or the phone needs to be rooted).

You can also install using the Android Debugger (which is part of the SDK), again, connect via USB, use the ADB comment to install.

Both of those are pretty simple, especially the first method.

The "trick" is the APK files aren't directly available through the normal channels like the official App Market or App Brain. Those resources assume a phone is connecting, or they push apps down to a registered device.

Quite a few APKs circulate, but _that_ is a way to get some bad mojo. I've installed a few APKs directly, but it's usually through a known source (like a download directly from the developers/publishers website) or a well known dev over at XDA.

The OTA install is actually outstanding, but if you don't have cell or wifi services, then you have to go through some of the gyrations I outlined above.

Assuming you have internet at home (since you would need to in the case mentioned above with apple apps)

You can just go to the Android market website and login to your gmail account.

select your phone (if you have multiple)

then select an app you want and it installs.

So in effect even better than apple cause you do not need the cord

That's no help as that still requires the phone to actually download the file, s/he can't transfer large amounts of data to the phone via wifi or 3G (I assume your data package is unsuitable too).

I don't know about Kies for Android phones, but Kies for Bada on the PC has a Samsung App store that lets you download on the computer and pipe it into the phone when connected to USB. I hear there's a Samsung App store for Android, but I think it is really small and won't have market apps. Someone with Kies for Android can confirm?
