Help I really want to love it...

Newbie
Hi all,

First off I am new here and a very new owner of a DHD. As the subject line says, I really want to love it, but there are a few issues that if can't get resolved it will have to go back. I thought as I have only just got it today, I would have 14 days to return it. How wrong I was. If you read the returns policy, you CAN'T return it if you have

1) Personalised the phone in any way (e.g. set the date and time, alter any menu views or ring tones, add content of any kind - including contacts).

2) Use any of Three's services (e.g. make or receive voice calls, video calls, send or receive text messages, browse the internet - including pressing the Planet 3 button).

3) Take or store photos, videos or load data of any kind to the phone.

We recommend you don't insert your SIM card

So that means that you can look at the phone but not try it out. How does that work? Do you buy a new car without a test drive??

Anyway rant over...

The issues I have (apart from the battery, which I can handle)

1) Is that I live in a very poor reception area for ALL networks, but where I could rest my old phone (Samsung S8000) to get 1 maybe 2 bars to at least receive texts. I get NOTHING from the DHD ANYWHERE. So no good as a phone then?

2) The volume from the media or video player and notification alerts is VERY VERY quiet. Unless I am missing something what good is that? Yes I know I can use headphones.

Sooooooooooooooo, is there a fix or is it something we can work round?

Can I return it under the sale of goods act 1979 as 'not fit for purpose'?

Sorry to bend your ear, but at the moment and I am soooooooo dissapointed with it. :(

1. Sorry about this. I dont have any problems with reception. Actually the reception on mine is awesome, better than my old SE. About the same as my nokia. Might be a defect in the handset..

2. Known issue, might be fixed in a software update later (when gingerbread is out) but for the time being nothing unfortunately.

2. I can live with, but not getting a signal I can't.

As I have opened, used it I am unable to return it?

I am going to pop into a 3 store in town to compare another DHD and ask them.

Yea I think that is the best thing to do. The Desire HD has been rumoured to have two antennas (look on the battery cover and you can see a metal thingy) which should help with reception. Really weird. I guess you are not on 3G yea. Only on 2G. You can check this by going to Settings -> Wireless and networks -> Mobile networks and then on network mode, make sure GSM is selected or GSM / WCDMA auto. Make sure WCDMA is not selected as this is 3G and living where you do it is kinda unlikely you will get 3G.

Also question, have you changed networks from your old sammy phone to the htc one?

I used to live in a place like that. I'm with Vodafone and went with what they call "Sure Signal" ... Vodafone Sure Signal - Vodafone .... basically a Vodafone mobile aerial in your house that sends/receives the (3G) signal over broadband (you need a 3G phone so the DHD is obviously OK). Works a treat. Don't know if 3 do one though .... you'd have to check.

Well got my DHD on Tuesday and all working OK except that I get NO signal  I am in a poor reception area, but I did get one or two bars with my old Samsung Jet S8000. I have tried various different 'tips' that had made no difference.

So I have been my local 3 store, they said that HTC have a rep for having a poorer antenna than other makes so if you live in a bad reception area, then you have crapped out and that not getting a signal overrides all the other T&C's and I will be able to send it back.

Rang 3 today, well Bombay or wherever in India and they made me run through a few settings on the phone. Ended up saying that I am eligible to return the phone. Well thanks for that!! I asked if I could change the make of phone on my plan and yes I could, so I asked for a Samsung Galaxy S. After a while they rang me back as they had to look on another system to look up my details as I had one of the first phone numbers they issued when they launched 3 in 2003. They said that they are going to send me another HTC Desire HD to try. I did ask what happens if that also did not receive a signal and they said I could change the make of phone.

Round and round in circles :p

Should get it on Monday, will update then.
