Root I Rooted Then Updated Now Problem

Dentul

Newbie
I rooted yesterday. I used TB Autoroot MR1. Today I updated the firmware to the current build of 1.70. After the reboot I got a screen for ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.5 that appears it is trying to install it. It shows progress an also the following: E:failed to verify whole-file signature. Then it says installation aborted.

I do not know where ClockworkMod came from. Has it anything to do with the auto-root I did? The screen gives me options including reboot system now. I do that, and when my TBolt starts up again, after about 30 seconds a screen shows up and says Power off - shutting down. Then after the restart it tries again it goes to ClockworkMod Recovery Screen with the options to highlight and select.
I can't install any app from the Market because the phone won't stay on longer than about 30 seconds.
Any help out there?

Ouch,

I would suggest using the IRC at XDA as they will be quicker to answer than here http://chat.andirc.net:9090/?channels=#thunderbolt

If and only if you are completely against using IRC you can try my ideas at your own risk...
If you can get into clockwork recovery, I would suggest downloading the rooted update available [ROM] Official 1.70.605.0 MR2 OTA Deodexed Rooted Busybox Mirrors Added :D - xda-developers

put the rom on your SD, then in clockwork do a factory reset and install the rooted update in clockwork as well.

I would still suggest using IRC first I don't have any experience in the autoroot programs and had you asked prior to rooting I would have suggested doing the manual root.

I did a wipe and clean in CW Recovery and that stopped my unit from re-booting. I guess I can now try to get a new rom and radio installed. Thanks for the help.

while im glad this event didnt brick your phone(it could have) i hope you have learned your lesson. there are several things here that you would have know about,if you had done some more research instead of simply using an outdated auto root, not the least of which is what clockwork mod recovery is,and how you should never try and install OTAs on a rooted phone.

my advice at this point would be to read thru the stickys, and the threads here on the forum to become with manipulating roms and backups in clockwork recovery and not rom manager, some terms, and decide if you want to run the stock rooted ota or try some custom roms.

please read, read, read, and feel free to ask questions before jumping into something else :)

<lecture over>

i dont mean to pick on you,but hopefully this thread can scare some new rooters into not experiencing the same things :)

I guess I should have read up more prior to my root attempt.
I did read that Root Explorer is used to rename or remove "bloatware".
I,m sure happy it all seemed to turn out OK for me in the end.

I now have read that the "easy root method" is not recommended. I am now reading more and learning more.

as you have found, most of the easy roots, and guides places other than xda,are not really updated. its not such a big deal if youre going to flash a rom right away, but if your not,it can lead to problems, since the phone will want to update itself to the most current firmware.

actually the manual method on xda, hasnt been updated yet, either. jcase has mentioned on twitter that hes out of town,so im sure it will be updated when he gets back.

the paid version of an app called titanium backup is a must have for rooters. it makes rom cahnging much, much easier, and one of its most useful featurs is that you can freeze/remove things with it. freezing simply makes the app invisible to the system,so you can see if its removal will have an impact on other things. just go thru and freeze a few things at a time, give it a couple days to see if you have any issues, and then if you dont, you can go back and permanently delete them. before permanently deleting,id make a backup in recovery-just in case ;)

I rooted my TB after OTA update using the "manual method", so it still works. If you use that method it will take you back to an older firmware version, I think version 1.13.xxxx or so. Then you can flash the rooted OTA update (which didn't work for me by the way). I installed CM 7, I am a very happy man.

Follow the instructions on xda very diligently, watch the youtube videos and you should be fine. Do not rush thru it, be very careful on step 6.

Goodluck!

Being new to this, If I want to flash a custom ROM like CM7, do I also have to install a separate Radio or do ROM's include a Radio or is the stock Radio still on my TBolt? Also, if I decide to revert back to the stock Sense ROM, do I have to remove or "clean out" CM7 from my phone?

Thanks

first we should prolly determine what radio you have. check settings/about phone/ baseband and sewe what that number is. if it ends in 223 or 402 then you have the older,pre-MR2 radios. there are alot of froyo based roms still that use these radios, and cm7 has a version that you can use with them as well. if you want to run the rooted OTA,or any of the GB leak roms, youll need to install a different radio. id reccomend starting with the "mr2.75" aka 627 radio and see how that works. a radio needs to be installed in hboot, wich is a somewhat risky procedure if youre not careful. its not a big deal if you are careful, but you may want to stick with some roms that will work with what you have to get some experience working with your phone for now.

before you flash cm7,or any rom,you will make a nandroid backup in clockwork recovery. this is exactly a snapshot of how your phone is currently set up. if you want to change from cm7,youll go to recovery and wipe data/cache/dalvik cache and then you can either: 1)restore your previous backup or 2) flash a different rom. so the simple answer is "yes, youll have to clean your current rom out before installing a new one" :)

My Baseband Version is 1.16.00.0402w_1. My TBolt is rooted. (Build No. 1.13.605.7) so that would be the older, pre-MR2 radio. So I think what you are saying is if I want to use a newer custom ROM like the leaked Gingerbread on my TBolt, I should also install (via hboot) a compatable MR2.xx Radio. I now have noticed on the Thunderbolt ROM List on this Board, that the description of the versions also mention which Radio that ROM will work with. (I have also found on this Board a list of Thunderbolt Radios available for download). I am thankful of all posts on this great board. I know many others are picking up on all your info and help.
Thanks again.
