I talked to Verizon, and need some advice

Batt1719

I posted an earlier thread talking about all the GPS, email, and sync issues I have been having. I am tired of constantly having to refresh everything to be up to date. I called Big Red and talked to technical support, they didn't know if an update was coming. They did however, offer to switch my phone with a certified smartphone, such as the Droid X, Inc, or Droid 2. Should I switch, if so to which? Would they give me a better smartphone experience? Should I just wait for the update and hope it fixes my issues?

if you have no desire to root/mod your phone you would probably be better of with any of those 3 phones honestly.

since those phones are either bigger or smaller than your fascinate, you may want to go play with them in person to see how comfortable you are with their sizes

I'd ask what a "certified smartphone" means cause to me it means "refurbished smartphone". While I'm sure not all of them are THAT bad, I have heard some horror stories about refurb'd phones and people having to send them back 3x before they get one that works.

Make sure you know what you're getting into exactly before you do it. A fascinate that takes a little while to find a GPS signal and doesn't push your emails thru as you would like is still better than a refurb'd Droid X (or incredible or anything else) that breaks over and over.

I would *really* avoid the certified refurbished phones.

I had a Droid 2 that bought new, it had antenna problems and continually lost service, unable to make calls or use data. Sometimes it would last minutes, other times for hours.

I then received my first certified. It's important to note Verizon's emphasis on there is a 100 point check list that the phone goes through. Bare this in mind as I describe my phones.

The first certified Droid 2 had either red pixels or dead pixels, depending on how liht or dark the background you currently were viewing. That went back.

Certified #2 arrived, worked fine, but it appeared someone tried to excavate the space bar from the keypad. I tried to not let it bother me for a few days, and after having to continually push it back down(it's essentially a plastic sticker), I called Verizon and had another one sent to me.

Certified #3 I thought was going to be ok, until I noticed how hot it was getting while running, eventually the screen would go off and stay off, then reboot about 10 minutes later. It would do this once a day, sometimes more frequently.

Then, after explaining my lack of faith in the whole certified program and Motorola's quality control, I was allowed to switch to a brand new Samsung Fascinate.

The droid 2 is a great phone--as long as it works. But the headaches of having to reinstall everything and ship phones is a pain in the butt.

That was my experience during the month of December.

Like everyone else is saying, watch out with the refurbs. I bought a droid x on release date and since then i was given 5 refurbs with mostly different problems ranging from dead touchscreens or random crashing and rebooting as well as gps problems. I was told they would not give me another droid x so they sent me a droid 2 and again I had the same rebooting/freezing issues. Verizon agreed to send me a fascinate and while its not perfect it is a hell of a lot better then anything motorola has been able to do. This is the first verizon refurb I have gotten that was in good shape that was not broken. I once was sent a droid 1 with a 1/2 inch chunk taken out of the slider.

Thanks a lot to everyone, I think that I will just hang on to my facinate for now. The new maintenance update is supposed to address email and syncing issues.
