Root I think I am going to root in the morning..

After watching these videos...It seems pretty simple and I'm pretty confident I can do that..

Before I do this though should I delete everything from my SD Card? Or leave it as is?

As for ROMs I am leaning towards putting Cyanogen Mod 7 or Liquid Gingerbread.

First, I can't comment on what you have on your SD, but I would not recommend formatting/deleting content on your SD. I don't see why that would be necessary, but I'm only an advanced noob. I've never done this.

I can't comment on the method (e.g. superoneclick), but I'd be willing to bet you'll be fine.

Remember...as soon as you root it's really, really a good, no great, idea to install ROM Manager, flash clockworkmod recovery, and perform a backup (nandroid). Then, install Titanium backup to backup all your data, settings, and other crap (many seem to prefer mybackup pro lately, but I've never used it). There also paid versions for each.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to ALWAYS backup before flashing ROM's, kernels, or any other damn thing you may find. If you have a good solid backup and can get into recovery, your rear will always be covered.

When given the choice to wipe data and cache, you should always do it unless you're coming from a very similar version of a ROM or a minor update. Otherwise you can pretty much guarantee a "bootloop." Another reason for having a solid backup.

Now you can flash the ROM of your choosing. I think your choices of CM or Liquid are a great start. I'm currently on Liquid GB 1.7.

Edit - 6 - After watching this youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS0ClwEsajA and downloading the gapps from his link I've now got my google apps back on my phone and my contacts synced.

Edit - 5 - Installation of Cyanogen Mod 7.02 complete! I've successfully rebooted back to the main screen of my phone now

EDIT - 4 - Okay I've wiped data factory reset and completed that and just finished installing the zip from my sd card.

EDIT - 3 - During the back up the bar filled up once and is refilling again is that normal? It hasn't said backup complete yet so I'm letting it run it's course.

EDIT - 2 - I've flashed the rom thing in rom manager I'm now in recovery making a nandroid backup.

EDIT - Okay I am going to give it a shot at installing a custom rom hopefully all will go well..if not I *hope* I have this forum to fall back on for support and help..

Here goes..

Well the root did work (SuperOneClick) Method. I had to install the Motorola Drivers first cause it was hanging without them, but once I got them it rooted fine with no problems. I renooted my device and have the Super User App so I downloaded Barnacle Wifi (root only) ran it and was able to connect my ipod to it and go online with it.

I havent put a custom rom on it yet..All I wanted really was the wifi tethering just in case I go out and I would rather use my ipod instead of my Droid to go online.

With that said should I be careful how much I tether? I am on Verizon and dont want to get in trouble.

I want to add to carassius' post. I am one who has preferred MyBackupPro (MBP) over Titanium (TiBu). Why? Because of all the people who come along and post problems they are having after using TiBu to restore all their apps, data, and settings. It just doens't work well going from rom to rom. Not only that, but there's now a free version of MBP called MyBackupRoot.

Your last post seems to have answered itself otherwise . . . .

I don't switch ROM's much, and thus, don't demand much from TiBU, but have never had a problem.

Maybe I'll give one of the mybackup app's a whirl and see how it goes.

The problems usually arise with TiBu when restoring system data/settings. I use MyBackup to backup apps, but only use it to restore the ones not done automatically by the market. Then I use the data backup to backup/restore call log, bookmarks, sms, and mms.
