Help I Think My Gnote Might Be Bricked

Hello, I am from the UK and have a Samsung Galaxy Note. I got the option to upgrade to ICS 4.0 last night. Before attempting to update it was rooted but not on a custom OS. ICS downloaded fine, however after it rebooted it got to the end of the installation bar and just stopped. Not sure what to do, I just left it until eventually my phones battery ran out. Now my phone doesn't turn on past the "Samsung Galaxy Note N7000" screen. I've only had the phone 10 days! What can I do?

What happens when you connect the cable to recharge it? Does the screen light up to show a battery icon? Have you tried keeping the power button pressed for about teen seconds?

If you really have bricked your phone, the bad news is that there is nothing to be done other than sending the phone back to Samsung to have the eMMC chip replaced.

Before you do that, take the battery out of the phone for a while just to make sure it is properly reset. If that doesn't work then press and hold volume up, the home button and the power button for ten seconds. This will take you into a menu where you can perform a reset (or directly reset the phone). This certainly cannot hurt at this point.

Thanks Eric, the battery had been left out overnight. I have got to the reset screen, which looks fairly promising. I have a choice to reboot, apply update from external storage, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, and apply update from cache. I assume you are saying I should "wipe data/ factory reset"?
I'm not exactly 'tech savvy', and this is my first android, so is it possible you could explain what these actions will do?

Thanks for your help Ian, the screen does light up to show a battery icon, the same as it would if you normally charged the phone while switched off. I did not notice anything happen when I held the power button down for 10 seconds.

Well reboot is obvious. I guess it is there to act as an abort option. Update from external storage would be useful in case you have downloaded a ROM and want to apply it. This is not your case since you performed an OTA update. You want the wipe data option. This will delete all installed apps and your settings and will restore the phone to a factory fresh state (at least as far as the system partition is concerned). Any data you have on the phone should be safe unless you select the format storage option (which you should NOT do).

My theory is that something you had installed is preventing the boot process from completing. After this reset (and hopefully you boot into ICS) you will need to reinstall all your apps and reconfigure your phone. You may also need to call your cell provider to get them to resend the network config SMSs if you cannot use mobile data. Yes, this is a pain, but hopefully you'll get your phone back!

Thanks again Eric. I did the factory reset but still have the same problem. It just doesn't get beyond the screen telling me what phone I have. I can get into download mode, so do you think I should try and install a ROM or something?
 
Can't hurt at this point I guess but make sure to flash a original Samsung ROM as this will not void your warranty. You can choose between the ICS update or going back to Gingerbread. I would tend to prefer going back myself, but then, I always did like to play it safe.

I can't tell you where to get the ROMs myself since I have never done this procedure (this is also my first Android device), but you should be able to get some links from this forum. In particular there is at least one thread describing how to go back to Gingerbread.

you can download stock rom for your device on the link below, choose your region. you should register first to be able to download. those are all official samsung firmwares and installing one of those doesn't void your warranty. since you are in uk, i suggest you flash first gingerbread xxlc1 open for europe (there are lots of xxlc1) because as i have experienced before, flashing a single file from your current state doen't get you past the android icon. xxlc1 has 3 files namely pda, csc and modem. also download the flash programs in the menu above the page. you will get all the necessary program files and flash guide in pdf format. read and follow instructions carefully.
