Help I think my vibration motor just broke

Hey all. I have a Verizon GNex and here's a little back story. I always turn data, wifi, everything off when I go to sleep. However today I woke up and turned it all back on and got a bunch of notifications at once (more than usual) and the vibration was really strong. At first I thought nothing of it because it always does that. But then I got to work and started using it and felt no vibration at all. Texting, soft keys, nothing.

I tried rebooting, battery pull, everything. Still won't work. Now here's the interesting part. When I hold my phone close to my ear and shake, I can hear something rattling. Fun stuff! I am unlocked and rooted but I can easily get back to stock. I got the phone back in January and don't want any other phone. Would Verizon replace it for me?

hehe you said "vibration"

Seriously, though. That pretty much sounds like your motor is broke.

VZW "should" accept it back. As long as it doesn't look like you dropped it 30 times...

I would make a nandroid, (copy it to your computer) then set it back to stock. If you still get no vibration, take it to VZW...

My phone is my baby I've never dropped it so that's not a problem

too bad... i dont use vibration for anything... wish i could turn it off on the lock screen, or at least make it weaker.

the rattling you hear is probably the camera autofocus mechanism. there are threads about it. its normal.

But I've never heard it before. And whenever I get a notification or when something happens when it should vibrate, it rattles instead

My Nexus's shutter does NOT rattle, although my old Droid Incredible did.

From everything you said, it sound like the motor broke or the weight broke/came loose from shaft...

It sounds like a tiny marble shaking around in their so it's very possible that it's the weight broke off. I won't have a chance to back everything up off my phone tonight so I gotta try tomorrow to talk to verizon

So if I made a nandroid and copied it over, will that make a copy of all pictures and Media and everything or just the file system? What about Titanium Backup?

Take a Nandroid (this will be an image of your OS and apps + settings) and simply copy and paste any folders and files you have on the SD partition, which you see in Windows explorer when the phone is hocked to your PC via USB (a MTP connection).
