Took delivery of the Sensation today and went to use googlemaps navigation. I turned off WiFi and mobile data as I'm sure id heard the maps were already downloaded on the phone so no need for data, but it didn't work...as soon as you cut the data no more map will show.

I then haveva look around the phone at something called locations and it says u have to pay for the maps and for navigation??

That link doesn't help as the article is dated 2010 and the Sensation is just out so already has the latest updates.

Given that the article was dated 2010, and not only provides the version number of Google Maps, but also the version of Android it supports, you should be able to determine if it should work on the Sensation.

US version of Google maps is currently 5.6.0, sans any beta/leaked releases. FWIW, my mobile data is off, as well as wifi, and I have street level maps of the US. You may want to check your version number, as well as connect to the internet, in order to cache all of you required maps...then try without data access.

But remember, Google Maps is not Google Navigation.

google navigation is freely available on any android device, but it's only available in a number of countries

How do you cache maps?

I know but my query is not that...its that in Google maps/navigation it will only work witha data connection BUT I'm sure the maps should be built into the phone on the latest HTC phones and so shouldn't need data

Didn't HTC make a big thing of their Sense MAPS app, that does cache maps, in an attempt to get people to buy their phones? Seems it's not present in this phone though. Did they abandon it after Google started caching?

Google Maps still requires an Internet connection. HTC Locations, the built in mapping, isn't free but it IS included on the phone (on the SD card. If you've deleted the files it'll redownload them)

EDIT: Downloading the maps (UK = 443MB) is free BUT you have to pay for navigation

I've got mobile data and wifi "off", and Google Maps works (i.e. I have a GPS location and can scroll/zoom throughout the map "of the US". However any layer would require data (e.g. traffic).

Conversely, turn by turn Navigation (i.e. the blue upward pointing arrow icon/app) does require data.

I just checked it out and sadly navigation not available in my country (Egypt) although a friend of mine had the hd2 and the navigation was working (real time navigation)

Okay,

Maps are on the SDCard although if for some reason they are not you can download the UK or Irish Map onoto the SD card free of charge.

Go into Locations.
From the Settings menu click the Basket called "Get More"
You should be able to freely download the UK v5.757 map onto your SD card (443MB) and the Irsh map at 44.7MB.

No, the maps are on the SD card but useless as you cannot have voice navigation unless you pay a subscription.

Useless...may as well stick to googlemaps

Gonna have to disagree there. Google maps (and Nav) are OK as long as you aren't roaming, because data will cost you a fortune when you start roaming. And, of course, when you are roaming (i.e in another country) is when you need maps most.

The advantage with Locations is that you can at least download and save on your SD card for free the maps of the country you are going to visit. You can do that at home or over free wifi once there.

Admittedly the voice navigation costs you, and from what it sounds it is not very good. But at least you have some maps to plan with, and I understand that they will continually update your position. All without using any data.

I have a proper Sat Nav app (from Sygic) that I have just transferred to my shiny new Sensation from my old Hero. So for me I don't need Locations for Europe. But once beyond that I may give the maps a try.
