Help I unlocked my phone... Need some help

Hi,

I bought a S2 for my girlfriend from a friend of mine. He's french and had a simlock from Bouygues (french company).
He unlocked it for me. So i'm trying to get things installed for my girlfriend but Samsung Kies won't allow me to update to ICS.

I was thinking of rooting her phone (mine is, so she would want the same :D)
Once I root the phone will it stay unlocked?
If i install a custom rom like resurrection remix, will it stay unlocked?

I am unsure how my friend unlocked the phone.

Please a bit of help here! Thanks

Once unlocked your phone will remain unlocked after rooting or flashing roms. If you plan to root you might as well update to ics with Odin. You can get the latest ics firmware from here
[Stock Official ICS Firmwares] I9100XWLPT (4.0.4) - United Kingdom (XEU) [31-07-12] - xda-developers

Although hold fire on flashing at the moment as some of the latest firmware contain a brick bug. I can't remember all the ones which contain it so I don't want to recommended one for you. Someone else will chime in with which ones have the bug so just hang on till then.

Quite right Shotty!

In a nutshell, the latest Android 4.0.4 firmware contains a kernel which doesn't play nicely with rooted phones and in particular, ClockWorkMod, (CWM), see, here.

My advice at the moment, would be to flash a stock ICS, Android 4.0.3, firmware, such as LPG, using Odin before moving on to custom ROM's.
