Root I want swype beta back!!!!

I'm thinking of rooting my evo 4g from sprint for the main reason of getting swype beta back on my device since the version preloaded on evo's newest froyo 2.2 update sucks!

wondering if unrevoked or any other root makes this possible?

If you're trying to "get it back" then that means you had it at one point. I actually "lost" my beta once and all I did was go onto the Swype website, login, and I went to a section where they sent me a downloadable link. Dl'ed the link from my phone and that was it, I had Swype again on my phone. Have you tried this?

Yes but the update on the evo (2.2) comes with swype but it's the buggy version not the nice new beta version and it is programmed in to the firmware so you can't uninstall it and install the new beta.....my technical terms might be wrong but you get the idea....

you can use titanium backup or even use apps like root explorer or es file manager as well to uninstall the ota swype then reinstall the swype beta. though i have never had any issues with the ota swype version.

Yeah, ocnbrze is correct. Root first then go back and undo the latest 2.2. It's weird because I still had my Swype even after FroYo (2.2). Have you thought about flashing a rom? For instance, I have Myn's Warm 2.2 and it comes with Swype already on it. Or, if you root, you should be able to add the Swype .apk file directly to your phone and install it, that should work. Myn's Warm has the Swype that came with the OTA. The latest Swype beta is much faster and more accurate. Swype in Warm made me crazy until I replaced it. There are instructions in the Warm thread on xda (see post #3, FAQ) to uninstall the included Swype, so you can install the later version. It really is a great improvement. The only drawback is that you lose the nice Warm skin, which I quite like (you're supposed to be able to install the skin over the new Swype, but I haven't been able to get it to work properly).

I agree completely, the OTA SWYPE sucks a red @$$ baboons butt cheeks, I couldn't believe how crappy it was after using the beta for 6 months already.

Getting ready to root my Evo finally also, and was hoping to get my Beta back, I hope they'll let me update.

you know i have tried both ota and beta versions. i really have not seen any difference at all. anyways if you have any questions about the rooting process please feel free to ask. this forum is awesome!!!!
