I5700 Galaxy Spica/lite officially gets Android 2.1

By "Shut everything down" you mean you simply unplugged the phone? What was your firmware version when you updated? Or it doesn't matter?
And how about drawbacks? Are there any problems with that 2.1 version? Everything works? No lag?
Also. By updating do you get the root access? Or do you need to root first?
 
Shutdown means reboot PC and phone. Firmware was 1.5 before updating to 2.1.
Drawbacks are you lose all branding from your provider, including any software they have pre-loaded. You also probably lose any warranty with them.

Oh and of course you lose ALL data and programs loaded on your phone. So backup/sync your data first.

Some firmwares are pre-rooted, depending on where you get them. You don't need to have the phone rooted first, and it's not essential to root the phone after.

Rooting is useful if you want to tether your phone, or perhaps remove some of the pre-loaded software to free up extra ram.

Rooting also allows you to customise your phone.

But if you don't know why you want to root your phone, you don't need to. It will perform perfectly well under 2.1.
 
I updated to 2.1 & rooted it but cannot change the apps folder to RW so I can't install livewallpaperpicker.apk Ideas??
 
Since I updated to 2.1 (i570EXXJD1), I am unable to sync any playlists from isyncr or tunesync, the tracks are on the phone but the playlists just don't appear. is this a known issue with the firmware ands does anyone have a solution?
 
And what kind of software would be best for backup?
What is better, root first or update first? (I guess after just an update I wouldn't be able to see all the apps in the market, right?)

Doesn't sound like your phone is rooted. Have you installed the SDK? Can you switch to su?

C:\adb shell
$su
#

If you don't get the # prompt, you ain't rooted.
 
I can change to SU & use the remount command but it only works on the system folder & not on subfolders

You can backup contacts to your gmail account, or from within Contacts
Menu
Import/Export.
 
I went into the T Mobile store in Manchester yesterday to see if I could get my phone updated to 2.1. What can I say, they were absolutely clueless about the phone or the software update. It's painful how bad Tmobile are acting right now, they just don't give a toss.

thats t mobile for you i dont think they will release the update for the phone as the only phones they like to update are the phones that t mobile release like the pulse mini
 
It's obviously a low priority for both T mobile UK and Samsung to get the UK update out. It's a shame because they really could sell some phones off the back of it. I'd just like a firm date , is that too much to ask ?
 
Hi All, Got an i5700 and have had difficulty finding information about flashing it on my network. I'm not with T-Mobile, I'm with Virgin Mobile (UK) and their support is none existent when it comes to technical bits. There's not even a downloads section as such on their web site.

Anyhow, I tried flashing (around 5 times) the phone previously and kind of bricked it. I could still access the bootloader, and it sort of booted but froze after the loading line reached the right hand side while booting. Left it for about 5 mins. Got that phone sent back and replaced (I told them what was happening without including the bit about me using odin!) but desperately want 2.1.

The only reason I can think for it failing is the simlock which is:
Network Lock - On
Network Subset Lock - Off
SP Lock - On
CP Lock - Off.

Any ideas?

Incidentally, for anyone in UK, before flashing myself, I'm going to try and get Samsung support to do it for me.
 
It is strange to me that with android you have to get your operating system updates from your mobile provider, who make their money by selling new phones. Why would they go to the trouble of updating older models when they have a new one around the corner?
Why can’t Google provide the updates? You wouldn’t get you Windows or Mac updates from the electrical store you bought your PC from would you!!
Looks like the mobile firms have customers held to ransom and have Android sewn up.

I just wanted to let you know that I have just updated to 2.1 successfully. This is my first smart phone and until a couple of weeks ago, knew nothing about them. Now, I love it and use it more than my pc or netbook.

I had a lot of trouble at first, but read about not selecting the CSC file. I tried again and it only took a few minutes.

So, what is the CSC file, and will not using it affect the phone?

Also, I’ve read about “rooting” the phone. I take it that this will let you access the root directory. How do you root the phone and will it enable me to remove unwanted apps?

Ok, so here we go. Called the Samsung Service centre. They said that whatever the latest firmware available is will be put onto the phone under warranty (Stoke on Trent Service Centre) but couldn't tell me the exact firmware version they had. Samsung tech support (0845MSAMSUNG) said it isn't available to anybody other than three networks currently and to keep an eye on samsungmobile.co.uk.

I'm going to take my phone to the service centre for an upgrade under warranty (READ: FREE) and see what they come up with.

You ARE on T-Mobile. Virgin don't have a network, they subcontract to T-Mobile.

SP LOCK MUST BE OFF!! if you're doing it yourself.
 
I have been following this thread with some interest for some time. I have phoned t-mobile on several occasions about the update and have never got a satisfactory reply from them. I went into a t-mobile store today and they knew nothing about the update, I got them to phone customer services and they talked to technical support - technical supports answer was that there are no plans to roll out the 2.1 upgrade in the UK at this time.

Rooting does allow you to remove apps, and free up extra space. It also allows tethering. Easiest way to "root", it to install a "rooted" firmware update.

If you're on JD4, I have a "root firmware patch" update for it, and can send you details in a PM.

how would i get the update if i'm in the u.s.? i had a samsung behold 2 but sold that because it wasn't going to get 2.1 and i'm thinking about getting the galaxy but after reading it seems like there is different software depending on the country. help
