From metro? I doubt it very seriously. By other means... umm maybeI know this phone is new and all, but I'm just curious. Will we ever get ICS in the Esteem?

or any of the prepaidsRom-maybe eventually
official update most likely not.
Optimus M has been promised an update by LG to gingerbread for over a year now and i doubt they will ever get it.
LG just doesn't care about metroPCS phones.

You all are forgetting one major factor... This phone, like many other newly released phones during this time of the year, are actually targeted for the 'Holiday Sales'. Thus, the Esteem being one of the featured phone for this carrier... they would be smart to push ICS if it wants to keep itself competitive.
Not quite, it just suppose to be able to run on most devices out already, with the exception of the very lowend phones. ICS will still have to be ported like it is now by manufacturers, carriers, and independent devs alike. If it were like windows and could just install on anything, then it wouldnt fit on alot of the cheaper phones out because it would be so bloated with drivers etc that every phone doesnt need.from what i understand thoguh, ice cream sandwich is supposed to work on any hardware.. kinda like installign windows on ur pc.. sees what u have and uses it.. im sure there will be issues initially.. but if they want to push everything to it and if its what all its cracked up to be.. shouldnt be to bad getting it to the esteem or any other phone
Its not google/android that stops phones from getting updates, its the carriers. Apple is the only ones that make the iphone, so of course they will get OTA's.Ok about to catch some flack for what Im about to say but Im not scared . See I like android because it allows you to got crazy with the customization, lots of price range on handsets etc but when it comes to updates they SUCK!!!. Why not do it like Apple just push the update without the carriers blocking. Carriers block it so that only the high end phones get it and the rest don't. I understand is a business and you want to earn money but by blocking a section of your user base that won't help you earn any customer loyalty. just my two cents

It's not a simple process for the updates first the manufacture has to port over the software to their hardware. Then the updated phone has to go through testing. Then this is passed on to the carrier where they have to put their portion of the software and again test it. You are right the higher end phones get it faster because obviously the carrier wants to have the best and latest phones possible. But hopefully like someone said this long process will be gone with ICS.

Look what I found:
<.>
Optimus One users will soon have the official Gingerbread goodness on their phone. Responding to one of our readers Rohan on Facebook, LG stated that the update will be available in end of May.
LG has previously made it official that all the Optimus series smartphone will get Android 2.3, but there was no timeframe announced. Thanks to todays statement, we can now expect more details about the update soon.
We expect the update to be available via LGs own update tool. Interestingly LGs Facebook account says update will be available in Android Market, which is not possible, it must have been unawareness of the person responsible for the page.

It looks like we missed the boat on the update...

Google does do that with the phones they actually make aka the Nexus line. Otherwise its just software, open source software at that, and google doesnt control who uses it and who doesnt. Apple is closed source software and hardware so they have that control over it. If google were to do what you suggest, our community would suffer in the freedom we have to customize etc for our phones. The only thing that holds us back is the carriers. The only advantage to your suggestion I see is we wouldnt see new phones being still being released with 2.1 n 2.2 on them but instead would be on the latest android version. This is why i said Google needs to sit down with the phone makers and carriers and explain what you want from then. Look Apple is only one company making a phone for all the carriers but yet you don't see apple allowing telcos to fill up their phone with bloatware etc. Thats what Google needs to do.
Again, ICS wont be a simple install on any phone like windows/linux installs are, if it were it would only fit on mid to highend phones with large internal storage space. Its not as simple as on iOS because there is different hardware on the variety of phones. Google is already dictating who gets what. The telcos what they do is apply their own skin. Apple does control their Eco system yet they have the jailbreak community and they haven't gone after then. Correct google has the Nexus phones but are we chop liver? I bet you the LG Revolution will get ice cream and, our phone is identical to theirs but our fate is on Metros hand.
What and who is google dictating too? I believe that to be false because if it were true there wouldnt be a CM or AOSP for that matter, just cooked stock ROMs. Now that doesnt mean it wont come to that tho, but google has already said they would be releasing teh ICS source, so thats not dictating who gets what.I totally agree with that statement about being in metros hands.....i concuuuur

oh and a jailbreaked iphone stil doesnt = Android, its still purdy much locked down in comparison.

In other words, no matter how much you polish a turd it's still a turd.

I do believe what google meant by ICS would be able to run on most devices out is it will be more efficient with resources thus not be as demanding on the hardware. ICS is also supposedly going to have hardware acceleration, which if true will make it run smother on any hardware.
