I'm a beginner in android and I can't connect to Internet;
my problem is: How to assign static ip?

Wifi configuration is always "trying to obtain an IP address" and I don't have any option.

Thanks for your help.

Need some information:
1. What are you connecting to? Your own router? A WiFi Hotspot?
2. Do you have the correct SSID and Password for the Access Point?

It's possible that you haven't entered the password for your WiFi access point correctly. Android doesn't seem to give you a failure sometimes, just doesn't get the IP (and signed onto the network).

Verify that you've entered the correct information (hard to do on the virtual keyboard sometimes, but at least on my phone it has a checkbox to "show password".

To assign a static IP you'll have to set it in your router using the MAC address. You can't set it on the tablet, but that isn't likely your problem.

Thanks for your reply:

- A wifi hotspot (Airport Extreme)
- Correct SSID and password.

I also tried in a US Robotics with the same configuration and it doesn't work.

When I found the ssid, I type the password and it keeps "Obtaining the IP adress", but never connect because I need a specific manual IP, Dns, etc…

Unluckly, I didn't found advanced setting.

Best regards.

Hi again;
The problem is in my office internet connection (It's very special), in my house with dhcp it's no problem.
It's working with other devices (laptops and desktops), but in the tablet I can't change the Ip configuration, there's no button to this effect.

Is not a router problem, MAC restriction or similar. I only want to assign a static ip adress (in a specific range)

Thanks.

That makes more sense. Seems odd that your office network isn't DHCP, which means that they are issuing static IPs to everyone. I'm assuming that they have issued you an IP.

If the Acer doesn't have the Advanced option under Wireless & Network/WiFi Settings / Menu-Advanced then you may be out of luck. Seems like an odd exclusion to make. But this is where you would normally change it under Android (2.3.3) (including DNS, Gateway, etc), I don't have a 3.0 device in front of me, but from what I've seen that section on a Xoom is pretty similar.

No, there's only two items in "Advanced Wi-Fi configuration":
- MAC adress -> the tablet MAC.
- Ip adress ->Unavailable -- (It's trying to obtain one)

I expected some function else, but no lucky.

I think it's an Android 3 bug, isn't it?

I'm so sorry:
It was only "clicking" with two fingers in the SSID name and "adjust network settings" appears.
Then you can find IP settings and other.

I'm not used to work with my fingers, I need to improve my skills…

Thanks a lot again.

Glad you got it working. In payment you'll need to post a review from the stand point of a new android user. Most of the people here have Android phones already so they come at these tablets with an understanding of Android. What's your take on easy of use, and were your expectations met with Honeycomb?

I'm still looking forward to holding this tablet. The built in USB host is a big item for me, and since Acer is making a version of this tablet for Windows too, with a docking keyboard, I'm hoping that they bring that keyboard to the A500 like the Asus Transformer.

Here in Spain everybody wants the Asus tablet and they're waiting for weeks.
I only want to discover the Android world with no hurry. I don't care if the screen, the processor, etc are better or worse, I've got too much to learn and this is my first device.
I'm really happy with this gadget.

Sorry, what do you mean with: "you'll need to post a review from the stand point of a new android user".

I'm just asking for your opinions and experience so far with the device and operating system. As a new user, are they living up to your expectations?

What do you find intuitive / easy?
What do you find difficult or confusing?

The Acer hasn't been released here in the U.S. yet so all of us waiting to get our hands on one and try it out. The Motorola Xoom is still the only 3.0 Tablet available, and many of us aren't ready to spend that much money on it with so many alternatives about to be released.

On the A500 under WiFi if you pull up a connection there is a small are titled DHCP that if you 'click' on will open up so you can enter static IP, gateway and Network number - if your network uses the standard 255.255.255.0 then just put in 24 and then DNS numbers.
that should get you on ... on mine it kept going back before I could complete so it took a few tries but worked once all the numbers were entered

I want the Acer tablet to connect to a specific DNS but can't seem to find the options for it. If I change the IP to static instead of DHCP all I get is a couple of extras like IP address and Gateway. Anyone got any ideas on how to point it to a specific DNS?

Thanks

Just got my A500, currently running Android 3.0.1. I don't see the above-referenced 'DHCP' area or link when I view a connection. Clicking on the SSID doesn't do anything (that was an earlier suggestion). There is no 'Advanced Settings'. I'm trying to enter a static IP, gateway, etc, but can't find where/how to do that.

Thanks in advance.

See if this helps.
simply navigate to our wifi network on the tab, select our network and get the settings dialog. Under 'IP settings', select the dropdown and choose 'Static' (this is best done in portrait mode, since the dropdown now expands for more manual entries). Enter your encryption password in the Password field, chosen IP address (eg. 192.168.1.20) in the IP address field, your Gateway IP address in the Gateway field (leave 'Network prefix field alone), and your DNS addresses in DNS1 and DNS2 fields (I often just put my Gateway address in both). Verify your entries, and when satisfied, click Connect. If all settings are compatible, you should join your WLAN almost instantly! If not, re-examine your entries and retry, or step backwards through this process to determine where the issue originates. Hope this helps!

I don't see any option or link labeled 'IP settings' or anything remotely related. I'd attach a screenshot if I could figure out how to take one on the tablet (and assuming there are no issues copying it to my PC).

I added my home wifi network via the following:
Settings > Add Wi-Fi Networks

I was prompted for the following:
Network SSID
Security
Password (once I selected WPA/WPA2 PSK)

No other options. If I tap/click on the connection to view it, I see the following:
Status
Security
Signal Strength
Link Speed
'Forgot' link
'Cancel' link

The only "clickable" things are the 'Forgot' and 'Cancel' links.

There is no 'Advanced Settings' link, no 'IP Settings', etc.

So I'm stuck.

As noted above, I'm unable to find the 'IP Settings' option for the wireless network (home network) that I added to my tablet. However, I made an interesting discovery that I have yet to investigate, but thought I'd share.....

I found an available 'open' network listed in my Wi-Fi networks list. I clicked on it to view its settings and it DID include an 'IP Settings' option. I then checked other listed networks... that was the only one that was 1) Open and 2) included the 'IP Settings' option. I need the latter to set a static IP. But am going to investigate this a bit further. There are other devices (iPod Touch & several computers) on my home wireless network. But perhaps there is some sort of incompatibility with the tablet and the router ????
