ICS and No Hardware Buttons

Quickie question -- perhaps a mighty dumb one -- but being that I'm still among the legions awaiting the Nexus/Prime, how will ICS (especially on the Nexus, sans hardware buttons) cope with older apps that require buttons? I'm assuming any relevant buttons will appear below, but if an app has been around awhile does the Nexus by default display the relevant buttons or none at all? Just curious for those who've already gotten theirs and/or for developer-types among us.

Put another way, how many of the apps I'm running on my X are going to be obsolete as of 12/8?

There are only two buttons missing, one is a menu button which appears as needed as three dots on the button bar. The only other one that's missing is search, and it appears that apps requiring search will have to display a search button somewhere with the advent of ICS.

Yep, just saw the front of the device. Dumb question InDeedy. It's been so long since I've actually examined the lower/bezel portion of the phone I forgot those buttons were there. Thanks for the info...
