Root ICS OTA install failure

I have had the Bionic since day one after upgrading from the original Droid. I rooted it using Pete's tool only so I could have wifi tethering access without removing any bloatware or messing with ROM. After the court decision ruling against VZ stating they could not prohibit the use of tethering apps, I unrooted my phone and began using Foxfi.
When the ICS OTA update hit the air I downloaded it (downloaded completely) only to have it stop installing after about a minute, reboot, and display "Software Update Failed". I did this 3 times with the same results and called VZ support. They suggested doing a factory reset, which I did. Same results after the reset and I noticed the Superuser app was still installed on the phone. I assumed it would have been removed during the unrooting, but it wasn't. Phone works fine, only its still on Android 2.3.4. I called VZ back and spoke to someone else who said the ICS update was having "known issues" and was told not to attempt updating the software as a patch would be applied soon. VZ told me they would call me back in a week ( on 10-31-12) to verify the patch works.

Using Root Checker my phone shows as "not rooted", however the SuperUser app still exists. Could this be causing the problem? Is there anything I can do on my end to get this update onboard or should I sit on my hands until VZ calls me back?

Thanks for any advice.

One thing that you can try is to re-root the phone, temporarily, and follow the first six steps in this guide (for the Droid 3): http://androidforums.com/droid-3-all-things-root/611821-unroot-manually.html

(Note: don't type the quotation marks. Also, don't type "(if applicable)". These steps should say to enter this text; in other words, type these commands at the prompt and then press enter to make the commands work.)

To manually Unroot your Droid 3:

- Download "Android Terminal" from Play Store
- Start the Terminal and make sure you are at a # sign. (If not type "su")
- Type "mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system"
- Type "rm /system/app/Superuser.apk"
- Type "rm /system/bin/su"
- Type "rm /system/xbin/busybox" (if applicable)

Then, shut down the phone. Start up the stock recovery using this procedure:

- Hold both volume buttons down. Press the power key to start the phone
- This should start the boot menu, with white text on black. Press VolDn once to highlight "Recovery" and press VolUp
- This will show a display with a triangle with an exclamation point. Press both volume buttons to start the Recovery menu (blue text on black background)
- Press VolDn until you highlight "wipe cache partition" and then press the Power button
- When the menu returns (it should take a few seconds), press Power on "Reboot system now" to restart the phone.

You *should* be unrooted. You *should* not have the superuser app anymore. See if that helps...
