ICS Should have Panoramic Camera - do we?

Android Enthusiast
Hi all,

ICS should have a panoramic camera mode - do we have that functionality on the original ROM? I take the occasional pano shot and have a 3rd party app but the stock ICS pano seems pretty slick from what Ive seen.

I dont see it anyplace in the camera software. Anyone help with its location?

Thanks!

I don't think so since the stock rom is running sense 3.6, which it doesn't include panorama function in the stock camera app.

^ This, mobster rom and H3 have these capabilities preinstalled.

Thanks all. Not a compelling reason for me to risk the root procedure. Im so happy with the phone right now (3 days old) that Im wary of upsetting the apple cart. I have no problem with the process of rooting its just that, right now, the goodness of the stock rom outweighs the 'minor' inconveniences of a few missing bells and whistles.

Thanks again.

what risks?

what risks?

With any rooting procedure there are always risks. Either user-error or just pure bad luck during the procedure. Then the mobster rom seems to be peppered with issues such as battery gets hot, flaky 4g, contact merge and though its goofy, the 3D functionality does not work. I know 3d is goofy but seeing as the phone has a specific hardware switch and a screen specific to 3D, it seems a shame to throw it out with the bathwater.

So far the features I would gain from root that Im interested in are:

Google Now
Wifi tether
Camera Panoramic

The 'want' list is building as I play around with ICS but right now the slim chance I brick the phone (for s-off procedure) does not seem worth it.

I hate to disagree, but I've been using Mobster ROM for three days straight (with an extended battery nonetheless) and I haven't had any of those issues. I remember version 1.07 and 1.4 both had all of the symptoms you're describing now, but 2.12 is bug free. And with JMZ's kernel, not only do you have near perfect performance, but all of those issues have a zero percent chance of happening.

(also there are no risks associated with rooting, but rather with flashing ROMs with S-ON, as well as obtaining S-Off. Once you've gotten S-Off, there are no risks unless you like inflicting self pain or are into trusting devs you find at sketchy sites, Mobster, Leslie, and JMZ are all very trustable, really anyone here is and make very high quality work)

"goodness of the stock rom"

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Thanks, I needed that. There is no risk to rooting by unlocking the bootloader. If you can butter your toast in the morning, you can root this phone. The stock rom is crap compared to any custom rom.

Dont forget my enthusiasm stems from the fact that Im in the honeymoon period as Ive only had the phone 3 days.

Yes the "goodness". I came from a year of owning the Motorola Triumph. The GPS was the biggest pain in the a$$ with its 5 minute wait time for a lock. Im loving ICS, the geeky facial recognition to unlock the device and Im hitting 9mb download speeds where the MT was getting 0.3mb - so yes, the "goodness". The phone is night and day to the MT.

I also read the shipped ROM has a much better camera - is this true? Non - fuzzy etc. Also, can I revert back to the shipped ROM if I want to sell the phone down the road?

I work with code for a living so I have no doubt that a few command-line instructions will not trip me up but its a fact that a root procedure can brick your phone. Unlikely, but possible.

Finally, I have huge respect and gratitude to the devs. Without them I would not have been running MIUI on my MT for the last year. They made the phone 100% more usable. I am sure the EVO ROMs have had just as much work and love put into them.

Thanks all :)

i dont think ive ever heard of anyone bricking their device during the root procedure.

Everything you had problems with (except the contact merge because I didn't use it, and the 3d I didn't test) is the exact opposite. You should try reflashing. 4g actually works now with mobster rom and with the Anthrax Kernel, it helps with the hot cpu issues.

After seeing this message thread, I was looking for info about the ICS panorama and also found that app at Google Play.

I had been using Photaf, I like Camera ICS. Only one problem, my EVO V didn't like having shutter sound turned off.
After a normal still picture is made the screen froze and message appears saying the app stopped.

On a side note, I came across a web page at HTC telling about Sense 4.0. Unfortunate for those of us with what is actually an old smartphone now even with the new name. The features for the camera they tell about would be terrific to have. Slow motion video, HDR, faster response and better focus.

Introducing HTC Sense 4.0 - HTC Sense Features

Those camera features that you listed for Sense 4.0 are actually tied more to the cameras silicon than Sense itself, even with the upgraded UI our camera is not capable of most of the improvements available on the One series.

Wasn't sure but I figured as much, which is why I was saying "old phone".

Intriguing stuff they tell about there, anyhow. I could see myself upgrading to a new 3D smartphone if it exists a year or so from now just to have the HDR and faster shutter, but probably not unless the basic dynamic range improves as well. Maybe not much hope of that in the near future, but I was surprised to see sweep panorama appear not long after (for reference as to my concept of time, a year is nothing to me) it showed up in digital cameras.

HDR is available on many custom roms along with panorama, they also unlock other things such as having more than 5 windows open on the stock browser Beats audio and 2 mp resolution on the ffc.

Thanks guys but time off work and a gadget obsession made me root the phone. I know I said I wouldn't but Im a phone junky - the urge was too much. :)
I installed the 'midnight' rom and I'm very happy with it. All the functionality of the retail rom but with pano, wifi tether and then I installed Google Now. GN is awesome!

Thanks for all the feedback.
