Help ICS upgrade

1981

Android Enthusiast
hey guys,
please advise me on this.
is it a good time to upgrade my GB to ICS now, since there are all these problems happening to many, after the ICS upgrade. Is it really that different cosmetically?
I checked out through Kies and it shows the upgrade for my device and I actually, went few steps with the installation but then, cancelled it. I am using unlocked O2-SGS2 in India currently.
When was this official ICS released? please could you suggest a time period that I should wait for my upgrade, so that all the major current issues are rectified by Samsung. Thank you.

I upgraded no problems by making sure the internal SD drive was free of corrupt files, missing links or directory problems. ICS is not vastly different cosmetically most of it is under the hood. It runs more efficiently. You will see slight changes in the task manager, and the browser but not a lot of other visible changes. The best thing for me is that it got rid of the carrier bloatware. Samsung/Google must have put their foot down not allowing backround rouge apps tarnishing their name of S2 and battery life.

If you do a search you should find comparison reviews I have read a few and there is a PDF file somewhere I have posted before - let me know if you have no luck searching.

thank you. got hold of that 42-page pdf file showing the upgrade variations. nothing too drastic cosmetically rite. for such a major upgrade. even the boring dialer looks almost the same.
seeing a lot of faults about the ICS in this forum is making me sceptical whether to go ahead or to continue for some more time, with the existing GB with lots of installed apps and a few launchers and lockscreens.
please advise;
-how to make sure that the internal SD drive hasnt got any corrupt files?
-also, after the upgrade, all the apps and launchers previously used, would have to be manually installed once again rite? generally, what are the chances of the apps in GB being compatible with ICS.
-what about the pics and videos in the gallery. are they wiped out during the upgrade, unless backed up?
-how long did it take for the whole upgrade process for you.

- Go to settings, Network, USB Utilities - then plug in the cable, then hit the button to make the green Android turn orange. If you connect cable too soon it does not work. After you use this method you should see a new disk drive on your desktop? Right click it and choose properties, tools and hit check now in the Error checking section. Windows runs chkdsk on the sdcard (FAT32 drive).
- After upgrade all my apps were un touched and all their data on the SD card. Although I'd advise making sure you have up to date versions first. most have been updated to be compatible with ICS.
- Pics, Videos and all files in SD card untouch. Although I still back them up just in case. The worst that occured was it reset all my touchwiz home screens. In hindsight I wish I had have taken screen shots of my homes screeens and app draw.
- upgrade took less than an hour

Good luck!!

I just upgraded threw Ordin and I have not had any problems. It is not a huge upgrade but it is a step up from GB for sure. Its like any update there are thousands of people on here and with thousands of updates some have problems. But I am sure for the most part people have no problems. It is good that you are doing your research though and good luck with your decision

couldnt keep my hands, off, ICS. went in for the upgrade finally, and great news!!! all seems to be working fine till now. no hangups or anything of that sort till now(just couple of hrs now). upgrade was smooth. took some time though. 1- 1.5hrs i guess(i fell asleep :) in between). and there was no initial set up wizard as was shown in the ICS guide(mentioned it might vary based on regions)
not a big difference to the eyes, but still it feels good to have the latest version. the lock screen was tweaked for good, the GB one was bad. but the stupid old stock dialer remains the same(it takes an extra two steps to dial a contact through the stock dialer rite). overall the UI seems to be lil more fluidy. with few modifications here n there. would have loved a bit more colourful UI but wat the heck. you could customize android anyway u want.
n the best part, all the apps and settings and widgets of the few launchers that I been using, restored back to almost the same way as before(except TW launcher which I dont use anyways). how neat!!!
the coloured wifi upload-download arrows are useful. and the swipe discard action in task manager looks futuristic. face unlock seems gud too. let me check out wat else is new in here. thank you guys for the advise!!! S2 rocks!!!
