Okay, I installed cm9 on my touchpad (alpha 2) and was thinking of installing an update (update-cm-9-20120329-NIGHTLY-tenderloin-signed). I have downloaded the file to my TP (sdcard/cminstall) but kinda get stuck there. I tried going to the ROM Manager, but it won't let me backup or install.
When I try "Install ROM from SD Card" it says only premium users may use Alternate recoveries....
I would be more than willing to pay for this if it does what I think - install updates. Is this correct? If not, what's the most painless way for a noob to install updates?
Thanks tons for the help!

Ken

Ammm I think you just didn't find the right post buddy. Here is the link - make sure you make a nandroid backup before you install tho. For that backup boot into clockwork recovery go into backup and restore go into backup and than press backup. Here is what comes afterwards

http://androidforums.com/hp-touchpad/523158-its-back-nightlies-rom-manager.html

colchiro does a nice quick way of explaining how you can install it over the alpha 2. Make sure you backup first and delete the file you already downloaded since it that nightly is already in the Cynogenmod nightlies in the rom manager.

I can testify that this works because that is how I installed mine I also selected from the options to download gapps. if you do everything correctly it should install without a problem. if you need help just reply and we can go into the chat part and I can help you out.

You don't need the premium rom manager. I don't have it and I just updated mine to the same one you are looking at. You can't use Rom manager to get the Roms with the free version. You have to download and copy the Rom to your touchpad manually.... but that's how I did it and it works just fine.

Like Alex said, first, go into Rom manager, choose "backup current Rom". This will take a few minutes, but backs up your current Rom in case the update fails or you don't like it.

Once that is done (and it takes a little while), if you haven't already, you just need to copy the 3/29 nightly file to your Touchpad - I just put it in the CMinstall folder. Then, go back into Rom manager and select "install Rom from SD Card". Then choose the CM9 nightly and let it do its thing.

Actually you can I don't have the paid version and I am still able to download and install the rom from rom manager!

Okay, well I purchased the premium Rom Manager 5.0.0.6. I have the nightly build on the sd card.
From ROM Manager, I select "Install ROM from SD Card"
It says, "Flashing an update package on a recovery other than ClockworkMod Recovery may not work properly. Proceed?" I select OK,
Next, I select the cminstall folder where my nightly is.
Then I select the zip file.
moboot loads and gives me the usual options, boot webos, cyanogenMod, webOS recovery, reboot or shutdown.

Am I way off track here?

EDIT: Lemme read the above two posts! Posted while I was typing, apparently.

Okay, when I try and do a backup it says I don't have ClockworkMod Recovery installed. When I try to install it, I select my "phone model" "cm_tenderloin" and it says tenderloin does not have an officially support recovery! Arg.

You're missing one step that buried in a post somewhere here. This isn't exact, but you'll be able to figure it out:

If you've never used recovery from Rom Manager before, tap the top option to "Flash CWM Recovery", choose the only option there (touchpad). Pick the 2nd option (4+). You should get a "Superuser Request"... tap "Allow", followed by "Success". Then you should be able to boot into recovery.

I'll correct this and the RM document later.

OK I am sorry I assumed that clockwork recovery was already present. I thought since alpha 2 was previously on there clockwork mod recovery was also used but now I remember that when I installed android it came in a different file which had to be installed.

It's there, but rom manager needs to be told it's installed. AFAIK you can't install it from RM yet.

Okay, thanks so far and I'm sorry for being such a pain. Here's what I've done so far. Set up Recovery (it now says "Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.X.X.X" Now, here's where I'm currently screwing things up. I want to install the update that I have on the SD Card...

From ROM Manager:

1. Install ROM from SD Card
2. Select "cminstall/"
3. Select "update-cm-9-20120329-NIGHTLY-tenderloin-signed.zip"
4. "ROM Pre-Installation" I check "Backup Existing ROM" and "Wipe Dalvik Cache" then press "OK"
5. Reboot And Install, select OK.
6. At moboot, which do I select?
a. boot webOS
b. boot CyanogenMod
c. boot webOS Recovery
d. reboot
e. shutdown

I'm kinda stumped here. It doesn't make sense to select c. Selecting b only boots into my existing ICS (I've checked the version in settings).

Did you flash CWM when you installed CM7? Sounds like you didn't.

On Moboot you should have ClockworkMod for an option. If you don't you're wasting your time. It would need to be copied to the cwinstall folder and you'd have to do the acmeinstaller again.

You can grab CWM from here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/18843-releasealpha2-cyanogenmod-9-touchpad/

Might as well get the latest moboot (3.05) while you're at it. You can use either acmeinstaller or acmeinstaller2 if you're just going to flash those two files.

If you install the nightly from RM, I'd recommend wiping data the first time you install CM9. It should also prompt you to backup and install gApps. You should do both.

Oh, crap. Okay. Thanks, I'll go ahead and get it done. I'm hoping some day to get the mic working. I don't really care about the cam.
Thanks again for your help.
First computer was a ZX-81 - been tinkering for a while now. This is only my second android and the first I've attempted to mod in any form!

Quick question, I just use the boot loader to open cwm, then go to backup and restore, hit backup, and it seems to back up the whole current system, data and cache. Can't I just restore from here if something goes wrong? Luckily I have never had a problem updating or flashing roms.

Rick

Just so I understand - and don't totally screw up: run acmeinstaller2 just like I did the first time? Or run it only to install cwm? I mean, do I use "novacom boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller2" or something different?

By running actmeinstalle2 you should have the rom you want and clockwork mod recovery in the cminstall folder. This will flash both clockwork mod recovery and the rom. You will also need the latest get apps so it can be all complete. So you need 3 files clockwork mod, cm nightly rom, and gapps.

This will most likely wipe alpha 2 and replace it with the current rom so backup your apps with titanium backup you can use the free version it worked just fine for me. Below I will post a YouTube video of idiots guide of installing alpha 2 the correct way with clockwork mod recovery which should help for the beginning steps.

Case Closed! Thanks, guys! Running ICS 4.0.4 and everything's perfect! Did not have to re-install gapps. Tons of thanks! maybe someday years from now, I'll be able to actually answer a question or two!

Yes, that's what I do when I don't backup from Rom Manager (same thing).

4.0.3 is pretty good too. Glad you got it figured out.
