Root idiot "noob" with flash issues....

ok, so after not being impressed with the froyo update, i finally decided that i wanted to flash a custon ROM (Paragon RC6). so i downloaded the bay_wolf thing and when i went to flash to stock through odin one-click i think i screwed it up. first of all when i got odin to recognize the phone i clicked start and a couple lines popped up and then it said something like <OSM all threads complete. succeeded (0)/ failed(1)> but nothing was happening. so i left it alone for about 15 minutes and still nothing. that is when my lack of patience kicked in!!!

I clicked start again (a couple times) pretty much same result. then i went to minimize the window and get online and i accidentally closed out of odin. but then the screen on the phone lit up with the "downloading... do no turn off target" thing.

well it has been on the screen for about an hour. is this normal and if not what do i do next!!!

sorry for being a pain in the _ _ _!!!

Did you have your phone in download mode before you started to try and flash? It's sounding like you didn't...

Pop the battery out, wait about 30 seconds or so, then put it back in and try to power up the phone. It should power up like normal (to whatever you were running before you tried to "flash").

From there, I would strongly encourage you to go to XDA and READ the threads on Odin and Paragon so you know exactly what you're doing.

you are absolutely right.... and i thought i had read enough. every post i saw about the bay_wolf program and flashing roms made it sound to easy!!!

so how do i get into "download mode" ???

Before you do anything - have you backed up anything on your phone? Are you even rooted now? Or are you planning on making the huge jump from totally stock to a custom ROM in one swoop?

Yeah, good question. If you haven't backed up, check this out: Backup - CapFAQ

FYI, I use both paid versions of Titanium and MyBackup Pro - important in case one craps out during a restoration of data.

Additionally, back up to an external microSD card. Need more info about the advantages? Let me know.

i have rooted. i rooted with the update.zip (chaoscentral) before the froyo update. then re-rooted with "super one-click" after that. have installed ti back up and ran a full back up. now i am just having trouble with the odin3 one click. i have figured out what you mean by "download mode" but even still i run odin and get to "file analysis.." and doesn't seem to do anything else.

Im just going to try and do everything one more time later from my home computer. for some reason when i tried to run the super one-click root from my work computer i couldn't get it to work, but as soon as i tried on my home computer it worked without any issues.

What is your phone's build number? That is important to know when using ODIN.

Before we go any further - Is your phone still working properly at this moment?

build 1007.

yes right now my phone is working.... but from what i understand i need to "flash back to stock (2.1) in order to go ahead with flashing a custom ROM. maybe i am wrong, but i thought that is how i understood the process.

by the end of this i would like to flash paragon RC6. i read their installation instructions. but from what i read the AIO captivate toolbox from bay_wolf should simplify the process...

I'll make this as detailed as I can, so bear with me.

Before you begin, make 100% that you have the Samsung drivers installed.

First things first, I would open the "3Button Fix" version of ODIN in the AIO Toolbox.

You will see a button for PDA and PIT - Click each button and it will open a window and you'll see file labelled PIT or PDA (whichever button you clicked). Select the file and it should show in the field next to the button when you get back to the main ODIN screen.

THEN get the phone into Download Mode (if you're unsure how, lemme know)

Plug the USB cable into the phone - You should see a COM port in yellow. Make sure that you see a file listed in the PDA and PIT fields.

THEN, click start. This version of ODIN has worked very well for me in the past, whereas One-click has not.

It should take 2-5 minutes and give you a green PASS message.

That will return you to stock... more to follow.

Since your phone will then be stock, you have to root the phone again. You can use the AIO toolbox if you want. Once back to stock and rooted, you can again use the toolbox to select "Flash Custom ROM" - It will automatically load Clockwork Mod and if you follow the directions listed in the toolbox, you shouldn't have any problems.

thank you very much for all your (and everyone else's) help!! i succesfully flashed my first ROM. no longer a virgin ;)

now i am just having some Ti back up issues and/or paragon issues. will try and surf the other posts and see if i can find a resolution.

thanks again for everyone's help!!!

With TiBu, the correct option to restore is, I believe "restore missing apps and data" ... NOT "restore missing apps and system data" ... if you did the option to restore system data you're going to need to reflash back to stock and try again.
