If android didn't exist what phone would you get?

atm, probably n900, looking forward to deciding between symbian^3&4 (n8 looks awesome), meego and webos

trick question. the real answer is, android. because if android didn't exist, I would have created it.

I was set on a Iphone 4 when it was announced but after the antenna fiasco and the way apple has been acting over the last few weeks left a bad taste in my mouth. Windows mobile is dead to me. Blackberry never did it for me. Palm phones are on life support. Thank goodness for Android.

I think Apple believed they were going to completely dominate the smartphone industry. They had just finished up their domination of media players with their iPod and they would carry that success over to phones. They defeated Microsoft-WinMo's entire paradigm was based on a stylus and a PC like UI that just doesn't work on a phone. They would have to dump everything in order to compete (and that is what they re still working on with WP7) Palm didn't look like they knew what they were doing and they lost all their apps when they switched to webOS.
And Android? A company that never produced an OS before would have a chance against the wunderkind behind Next and Mac? At best, it would be on the no-name bargain clones along with the other linux variants that nobody cares about...

Right??

apple doesn't believe that they were gonna dominate the smartphone industry... they already DO dominate the smartphone industry. Haven't you looked up any polls? They dont even have more than 1 model at a time and yet it appeals to such a large number of people. If thats not called dominating.. i dont know what is.

Apple does have dominances based on just one phone. But overall Nokia is still the number 1 phone maker in the world. They make/sell more phones than the number 2 and number 3 combined. I know number 2 is Samsung, but can't remember who number 3 is, it's either Apple or Motorola.

I had an iPhone before I got an Android, and without Android I'd probably still be using a jail broken iPhone all while cursing Mr. Jobs religiously each night before bed.

I mean Windows style domination. Total control.

Nokia makes lots of phones but nobody develops for them. Apple thought "hey, everyone will have to develop for us and they will have to get a Mac and learn obj-C and use our tools or else they will be completely left behind in the mobile industry."

there's a shitton of apps for symbian (made a game myself actually), but because there hasn't been a centralized "app market" before ovi (which hasn't quite took off yet), they aren't as visible
