Root If I root, which ROM?

Girevik

I'm giving some through to rooting my phone, but if I decide to take the plunge, how do I decide which ROM to use? As I understand it, different rom's have different features. Is there a cross reference anywhere that compares the various optons?

There is no cross reference that shows all the features of each rom and compares them. However before you do any flashing make sure that you can get into download mode by holding volume +/- and inserting the usb cable into the phone while the phone is plugged in. If you are unable to get into download mode, look up the forums on how to build the jig (this will save you in case you brick your phone and need to go back to stock).

Right now I am running cognition 3.02 (latest 3.04) and I like the ROM because it is the clean 2.2 froyo pretty much with no customization done. However the serendipity rom and the fire phoenix roms have customization thus making it look unique. Flash between them and decide but all 3 of them are great right now.

One of the things I'd like is Bluetooth voice dial. I understand that Cognition doesn't have that. How can I find out what does?

Some of the biggest differences are: whether the ROM overclocks or not, the theme (probably the biggest difference), the modem used (for bizarre reasons, different people have different success with different modems), whether it's based on Android 2.2 or 2.2.1, and whether it's based on Captivate firmware or I9000 firmware. That last one leads to various things working well or not working, depending.

There are other differences, but I'd say those are some of the biggest ones. Some of these ROMs come out with multiple new versions a day and the threads run for hundreds of pages each, so staying on-top of a feature comparison chart would be a nightmare. The simple one on the Captivate FAQ is enough of a challenge.
