If I use GV for texts, do I need mms.apk installed?

I'm running severely low on disk space and am trying to clean up everything I don't need. I notice android has this running in the background often so I'm wondering if it uses this along with GV to get my messages or can I delete it all together? It would also be nice to not have an unnecessary service running.

I'm using root explorer and made a folder on my SD card called app save where I'm moving all the apps to. If I remove a stock app that could cause issues later, moving it back to the /system/app folder and restart should fix it too right?

Here's a few more I'm thinking of moving and wondering if it'll cause any issues:

LiveWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
Protips.apk
Vpnservices.apk - I'm not connecting to any vpn but don't know if it's needed by other apps.
EmailGoogle.apk - there's also a Gmail.apk, so I'm wondering since I use Gmail if I need this. Seems like this was for imap/pop or if I wanted to connect to my work's exchange account.

[EDIT]
I've got Motorola Droid 1 from Verizon. I don't know what people usually run for free space on internal storage, but I notice that at 25mb is when I get the low space notice. I started getting this around a week ago and it basically shuts down my phone by not updating google voice or gmail. Gmail would actually not even download any new emails.

After uninstalling a few known bloatware apps, I'm running at 28mb, but I know only have a 3mb buffer isn't much. What else can I safely move out of internal storage? For a while I was developing apps using googles app inventor, but don't plan to use that anymore, at least with this phone. So are there any files left over I can clean up from that?

Yes, you still need MMS because GV won't do MMS. GV only does SMS. SMS is text only. MMS is pictures, sounds, and other multimedia (hence why it's called MMS).

Sorry, I forgot to mention I don't have a text plan with my carrier, I even block all incoming texts to my cell #. So...does that make a difference? Obviously using GV I don't send pictures or videos anyway and with no carrier plan, it seems like this should still be okay to remove.

Sorry to tell you this but it doesn't matter if you remove it or not. Removing that app will not recover your system space.

System apps are stored in a separate partition from the user apps,so removing any of those apps will just free up space in your system partition without doing anything to help your situation.

Without knowing the particulars of your phone, I would suggest moving apps to your Sd card (the stock Froyo way or using something more effective like Link2SD ) you can google either of those if necessary.

I'm confused.

My original question still stands, can I remove mms.apk without causing issues with my phone?

I do want to free up space on my system partition because it is low - I get the low space warning. I don't know if this is a set amount, %, phone based, etc, but I have found my warning comes on ~ < 25mb.

While the warning is active, Android seemingly goes into a kind of shut down mode since gmail and google voice apps no longer sync (I'm sure other apps are shutdown too), even when refreshed manually. I know this because as soon as I freed up 25+mb, emails and messages instantly began syncing again.

My apologies for not clarifying this earlier, but I have moved every app off my system memory to my SD card using both built in Froyo app, Apps2SD, and now RootExplorer. I wasn't aware it held any bearing on my original question.

The only 5 apps showing up in Apps2SD on my internal memory (other than stock) are:

Titanium backup
DigiClock Widget
Tasker
Wireless Tether
AWD.Launcher

You could freeze them with Titanium (anything you don't think you need/want), or install App Quarantine and quarantine them. If your phone doesn't go buggy, you can uninstall them. I assume you are rooted. I wouldn't uninstall mms.apk. Google is "supposed" to start supporting mms "soon", it may prove needed.

I uninstalled most of the wallpaper apps, email, gmail, a bunch of bloatware. I have bluetooth, gallery, market updater, music and a few others in quarantine. No adverse effects.

I am rooted, use link2sd to gain space.

Just copy mms.apk to a /sdcard dir and then remove it, if it causes problems, put it back in. GV supporting MMS will likely be through its own GV app, not using the cellphone's SMS/MMS feature.

I am rooted, use link2sd to gain space.

I've never used link2SD, I used App2SD. I checked out the page and it says one of the differences is "instead of linking /data/app folder (that means moving all applications), you can select applications that you want to move.." but in Apps2SD I can choose which apps to move, it doesn't appear to move them all. Is this a feature that may have been added to Apps2SD after link2SD said that?
