if i root my phone , (big iIF, as seems scary )
does the reset to factory setting button still work , or are you on yer own after rooting ?
i only thinking of rooting coz i hate the buit in apps lick stocks , facebook etc
also does this unrevoked download still work or is there some update ?
unrevoked

many thanks chaps :)

Best advice is to visit the "Desire, all things root" forum, look for a post by Danfrance and read the FAQs in his sig. unrevoked is indeed the recommended approach, but read the FAQ first.

On specifics, all rooting will do by itself is give you some options (and a customised recovery) - it won't change your ROM, apps or settings. So a factory reset will still be possible, but note that all that does is wipe user apps and data - it won't unroot you, nor will it change your ROM back if you've installed a custom one. For those things you need something called an RUU (all in the FAQs and the root forum).

One way you are on your own: you can't accept any more over the air updates once rooted (if you do you will mess something up for sure). But you can install your own updates quite easily, and don't have to wait for some network to add their bloat to them.

many thanks ,
so i dont have to make gold card ? and whatever version number i have dont matter if i use that softwear?.
as the more i read the more confusing it gets , some say it also depends if you have amoled or slcd , verion under 75 version under 85 etc etc etc ..

if i just follow the faq in his sig and use that download then thats i need ?
i just need it simplified ,
as the guides get so complex i gave up reading them ..

You don't need a gold card to root but its best to make one just in case things go wrong. What the gold card does is allow you to use any RUU (returns your phone to stock - which you will need if you have to send it back) rather than just the one that came from your network provider. If your phone came unbranded (not just on the outside but the actual firmware on the phone) then there is no need at all. To be honest the guides in Dan's signature are as simple as can be. If you can't follow them then I'd think very carefully about rooting. Unrevoked as a method is pretty simple and pretty foolproof but you have to follw the steps to the letter

ok i might have a go at it , i do have the force to sd card, so looks like i better reset phone to factory before i start , and yes i got an unbranded phone from CPW , about 6 months ago .
wish me luck , lol:D

ok i did it , phew
anyways it all went ok , and i have the superuser app in app draw , but
i still cant remove apps like facebook, stocks, etc,
the uninstal button is still greyed out ?
how do i get rid of this stuff ?
many thanks for your help chaps,
apparently my phone is now rooted, but i dunno how to go on from here

Install titanium backup and see if you can uninstall the apps that way
hi , yes i have titanium now , i did try the unistal but the phone freezes when it tries to reboot twice as it says , :(
and the app is still there after :(
also one more thing , i thought that rooting a phone meant i would have all apps to sd card , but its still the same as it was before rooting , its only with titanium that i can move downloaded apps to sd .
so far rooting seems to have been a waste of time for me .

whats the easyist way to get it back to stock if i wanted to ?

Apart from having root access your ROM is still stock. To unroot you need to use an RUU, which will wipe everything and reinstall stock unrooted firmware.

You can use Ti to "freeze" unwanted system apps such as Stocks. They are still on the device, but can't run and are hidden from the app drawer. Since these apps are in a different memory partition from the one user apps are installed to removing them wouldn't free you any memory anyway, so that may be an acceptable solution. It has the advantage that if you freeze something that makes the phone unstable you can use Ti to unfreeze it (e.g. when I froze Flickr it made the HTC contacts app crash in some circumstances).

Another option is to install a custom ROM with a set of apps which suits you better. And there are people who do things like edit the ROM before installing to remove apps, but I've never gone that far so can't advise on it.

ah yes that freeze is good , i will keep rooted now :)

maybe one day i will learn how to put a custom rom on ,
but my head hurts enough as it is , lol:D
thanks for your help
