I originally purchased a Samsung Tab 3. It was so slow, blocky, often froze, so I replaced it with the N7 2nd gen. Glad I did.
Thank you, I thought I was going crazy, I too bought a Tab 3 tablet, the 10.1 version and it was hands down the worst piece of junk I have ever used. The thing was so laggy I thought mine was broken but after talking with a few people who had and returned one it turned out that all of them are plagued with the same slower than molasses being poured on a cold winters day absence of speed affliction mine was. Then I decided to try a Tab 3 8 do to the glowing reviews it received by the people over in Tab 3 forums. They were using statements like, “it’s the best tablet ever and extremely quick”. This time though I wasn't just going to blindly purchase the Tab 3 8 like I did with the Tab 3 10.1. So I went to my favorite local computer store and bought four 8” tablets that I thought were the best to take home and test, I bought the Tab 3 8, LG G Pad 8.3, KIndle 8.9 HDX and the new HP Pro 8. I chose a store to whom I know the customer service manager very well and since my company buys a lot of stock from them he allowed me to try these tablets with the full notion that I would be returning three of them after I found the one I liked.
I went into this with a very opened mind but the Tab 3 8 turned out to be a very mediocre tablet, it wasn't that it was a bad tablet it just had a complete lack of anything that stood out spec wise, it was so just so, well, below average. That and they paired it with a three year old Exynos processor from 2011. The modern Qualcomm SnapDragon's and Nvidia Tegra 4 Chips found in the other three tablets I got were not only faster but completely wiped the floor with the Tab 3. I know benchmark scores only give us a broad view of the actual speed for a tablet but just to give you an idea of how much faster the others were, The Kindle with it’s much newer SnapDragon 800 CPU turned out a score of more than 20,000, the Tab 3 under 4,400, just wow. I bought all four tablets for around the same money, so it wasn't like I chose a premium tablet just to blow the doors off of the Tab 3. All four were in the 300 to 350 CHF (I live in Switzerland but the exchange rate is pretty comparable) price range, with LG G Pad 8.3 at the bottom and the Kindle 8.9 HDX at the top, yep, the Tab 3 8 wasn't even the least epensive one. It wasn't just the speed either that was better on the other three but the high resolution screens ranging from a really cool 4:3 aspect ratio of 1600 x 1200 to the insanely bitchin looking 2560 x 1600, the Tab 3 still being stuck in 2011 with it's 1280 x 800 resolution, what year is this again. All of them had 2GB of memory, better build quality and this one really got me Gorilla Glass, the Tab 3 doesn't have Gorilla Glass, now Samsung claims that they have their own special coating but I can tell you with the utmost certainty, it doesn't do jack shitt to assist against the prevention of scratches. I know this because I managed to scratch the Tab 3 8 after only 2 hours of use, I was even extra extremely careful with these devices as they weren't meant to be kept. I had stacked the HP Pro 8 on top of the Tab 3 8, nothing bad. Now some of the people over in the forums claim that they've had their Tab 3 for more than 8 months without so much as a scratch on it, typical my device is the best and invincible BS and in no way the truth unless they kept it in a drawer for the last 8 months. Well the Samsung support forums paint a gloomier picture and since the store where I bought these tablets from only keep their tablet demos on the shelf for no more than a month to minimize the damage being done to them so they can be resold. My friend the customer service manager told me, after I apologized for scratching the unit upon happily returning it, he told me not to worry about it that it’s a common problem with the tablet, he continued by also adding that they have to severely mark the price down of the demo Tab 8’s do to the abnormally scratched condition they're in when they get repackaged. Sometimes it’s so bad that the repair center has to install a new screen into it. Thank goodness the screen only costs them 25 CHF to replace, geesh, how cheap are these things to make. The Crazy thing about it is these tablets are secured to one location in the store and sit on top of a carpet like material, so it’s not like their being taken around Europe on some horny teens back-backing excursion.
I finally settled on the insanely fantastic Kindle 8.9 HDX, it’s so good that I also returned my Nexus 10 and used the extra money to purchase the LTE 4G, 64G model. I am extremely happy with my purchase. I don’t understand people who buy the Samsung Tab 3 7”, not when you can get a Dell Venue 7 with a new Intel Atom Z2560 (same processor as the Tab 3 10.1), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 1280 x 800 resolution and better build quality for the exact same price. For just 30 dollars more you can get the Dell Venue 8 with the Intel Atom Z2580 (which now makes it faster than the Tab 3 10.1), 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 1280 x 800 and Miracast) For just 50 dollars more you can get either a HP Extreme 7 or the EVGA Note 7 that has a super fast Nvidia Tegra 4 chip, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 1280 x 800 resolution, built in micro HDMI out port (perfect for connecting the tablet to a TV, then pairing a bluetooth Gamepad controlled for one bitching gaming console), active digitizer pen (included), with exceptional build quality or my favorite choice out of the bunch, a Kindle 7 HDX with the even faster Qualcomm SnapDragon 800 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 1920 x 1200 resolution, Miracast, with the best build quality I have ever seen on any other tablet except for it’s big brother the Kindle 8.9 HDX. Then finally your Nexus 7v2, also priced at a poultry 200.00, Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB RAM, 16GB (32GB option is so inexpensive though that I recommend just getting that one), 1080P resolution, and the best part it's a Nexus device os updates will not only come in fashionable manner but unlike Samsung, Google doesn't abandon their products after just a year, so you can be assured that you will get updates till at least 2016.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, I think I just like to hear myself think, huh.
