Root I'm a root n00b

Omar Days

Android Expert
Ok, so i bought a nexus 7 for my mum and after setting it up for her i basically dont want to give it back because of vanilla jellybean on it. It's beautiful!

So my question is can I root my note and put jellybean on it, like, an official version? Or are these ROMs of jb and ics etc just devs take on it?

I'd be surprised if there's a fully working JB for the Note already. In the meantime, why don't you install something like Cyanogenmod 9 for the pure ICS experience? I did it the other day, it is leaps and bounds better than Samsung flavoured ICS, faster sleeker cleaner, better battery life, oh my.

It is so good, it makes me shed a little tear at how much manufacturers & carriers butcher and sabotage the pure android experience. I've come from the iPhone, and only now do I realise pure android is absolutely the equal or better than iOS in terms of design and usability, something that is hideously and evilly obscured by TouchWiz/Sense etc.

As such, I'm extremely happy with my Note since putting cm9 on it, but I doubt I'll buy anything other than a Nexus phone in the future. All a Nexus phone needs for my money is a 4.8"+ screen and 64gb and/or a microsd slot and I'm sold. It's the paltry 16gb on the G Nexus that stopped me from buying it, the pentile display and questionable camera quality I could have lived with. Previously had very low opinion of pentile having seen of my friends ghastly old HTC screens, but using the Note has made me realise how much they've improved.

Oh fair enough, just assumed JB would be available already!

I'll root once i've read enough on it and find a good guide. not gonna lie, i am sh.it scared of bricking this thing!

And shedding tears here too. This nexus 7 i have has made me see how much of a hindrance and a drag touchwiz/sense is to these phones.

One question. With the rom you're using, are you able to use usb otg, and hook it up to your tv via hdmi still?

I seem to recall that's not working in cm9. Oh, same goes for the s-pen stuff. I don't use either so it was no big deal, but understandably could be a deal breaker for yourself and others.

Regarding rooting my Note and installing cm9, I followed this guide to root;

[Guide] How to root Stock ICS rom without binary count - xda-developers

Then this to install cm9;

How to install custom ROM - For beginners - xda-developers

I was on 4.0.4, experienced TERRIBLE battery life (3-4% drain per hour when idle!). Basically, you root, go back to Gingerbread where you can safely wipe/factory reset, then install cm9. I'd never even rooted before, so that's an indicator that it's not difficult or risky so long as you follow the steps correctly. Best thing ever, it's transformed my experience with the Note.

Regarding JB, cm10 is on it's way, woot!, although I won't be touching the early builds, I'll happily stick to cm9 till cm10 is rock solid stable;
