Ok my wife and I got the samsung fascinate and Im going, to sell my, phone and get the droid x ok when the person who buys my phone puts in the esn will it cancel my line

you will have to call vzw and tell them you are trading phones then someone else can activate it...

That must have changed. You use to be able to just activate the phone. If it wasnt reported stolen or was replaced, you could just activate a used phone online. I use to do that all the time.

it wont cancel your line. however, you will need to activate a different phone on your line before you sell the fascinate, because they wont be able to activate it until it has been removed from your account.

then, before you buy a droid x (i'm assuming you're not paying full price for one in the store), be sure to call CS to verify that the phone is not on the lost/stolen list, AND that it isnt attached to an acct that is in collections or has been written off.

If you can't activate another phone, you must coordinate with VZW. I recently did a trade, my old Incredible for a Droid X.
The guy I traded with had the X activated and so did I. We spent about 45 minutes on the phone with a VZW agent, they had to manually swap the ESN's on our accounts at the same time so neither line would be canceled.
I loved my Incredible and the open bootloader, but this was worth it. Why do I need to worry about a ton of custom ROM's when I found one that I really like in Apex. I like it better than any Incredible ROM I ran.
