I'm in love with my phone again!

In lieu of all these posts I see about people dumping their Vibrants, mine has received a second life. I just recently flashed a custom froyo rom on mine.
Last week, I felt like throwing my Vibrant hard against the wall every other day when it froze during navigation, photo gallery, and other apps. This phone was a nightmare!
But last night, I took the time to finally flash on a custom rom (Nero v3) and it seems that all these "problems" have disappeared!
Everything is super snappy, no annoying gallery freezes, no extremely annoying random phone restarts.

So for all those that are frustrated and coming to a "final stand off" with their Vibrants, flash that custom rom! I thought my phone was one of those numerous Vibrant lemons, but it appears that all the craziness was caused by poor software.

It sucks that all these people are ditching a perfectly good phone. I installed Nero V2 w/ Voodoo on my vibrant, and it's running excellently!

Did you flash the TouchWiz version or the other?

Just curious as it was on my list of choices.

What method did you use to flash? ROM Manager?

This is my 1st post and my 1st android phone so please bear with me if im not up to spped with everything thats going on ;) Ive been checking out the xda forums and this forum for the last couple days just to get a feel for whats going on with this phone. I just bought my vibrant about a week ago and the guy who sold it to me told me that its already rooted with android 2.2 installed. He had to leave before i could really get into the specifics of what this means. I have messed around with 2.1 a couple times so I know 2.2 is better, but what i dont quite yet understand is why having a rooted phone is better than stock, what my options are with a rooted phone, and what do "custom roms" do??!! I was reading this thread and my phone also has the ROM Manager app on it and when i goto it, it gives me a bunch of options under "clockwork recovery". I can provide the "about phone" info if that will help somebody figure out just what i have running under the hood of my phone
Also, due to lack of funds, my phone is not activated yet, so i'll probably have a better grip on things once I do, but for now ANY help that you guys can offer would be much appreciated
Thnx in advance

I'm running the touchwiz version, I'm pretty happy with it since I'm used to it. I just wanted a phone that functions really so I don't have any experience with non-TW.
I flashed it using ROM Manager after using ODIN to flash back to stock.

JadedSoul, there are definitely way more things you can do once you root the phone. Flashing a custom rom is definitely one of the benefits. I think it's a little hard to explain until you try it out. Custom ROMs are made by developers rather than Samsung. What's good about this is that you can have more features that might not be available on a "stock" ROM. (help me out here if I have anything wrong.)

There are some very useful apps that require rooting such as Titanium Backup (for backing up applications and data) as well at ROM Manager (back up an image of your current ROM).

There's much more that I don't even know about. There is a learning curve to all of this, but the only way to learn quickly IMO is to play around and try things out. Follow the tutorials and instructions as well.

Glad you found joy of ownership with your Vibrant. That's exactly the way I feel about the warranty replacement I received - production dated 10/20/10. Evidently Samsung listened and made some changes. The phone is bone stock so far but I have bookmarked your thread in case I get bored with stock. ;)

Thanks for posting.

Having a rooted phone gives you full control over the phone to access certain functions that are locked out by the manufacturer/service provider. To the average person, this probably doesn't mean much, but if you really wanna customize your phone or even just want to take a screenshot, you'll need root access to do it. Certain programs need root access to perform these functions. It's kinda like a new car with a speed limiter built in so you don't go too fast (and possibly wind up hurting yourself when you crash or brick your phone by doing something stupid).

It also allows you the ability to perform certain tasks that would otherwise be impossible without root access.

Thanks a lot for posting this. I've never wanted to root and install a custom rom because I was always worried about ruining my device... But since Samsung is taking forever to give us updates, I decided to install Nerov3 and it's awesome!!! Everything is sooo smooth :D

My phone is seriously lagging and I think I might have to do this. The only reason I haven't done it so far is because I'm afraid I'll mess it up. I have read tons of threads, but I'm still not 100% sure how to do everything.

Quick question... I have to root my phone first and then install a custom ROM (Nero v3)?

I waited about 5 months without getting the ota update from tmobile. I gave up and rooted, download clockwork, and flashed my nero v3 with the axura 2.2 coming close second.

I must say that I have been rooted and rom'd since I pretty much have been introduced to android and the stock Vibrant was fine for some time but the GPS has been making me want to rip my hair out. I've tried several different rom's that didn't fix any of the problems that i was having until someone put me on to Axura and I flashed the latest JL5 modem. My GPS now locks on to me within 10 meters and although it may not be the fastest, its still pretty accurate.

I tried Nero, macnut, and some other roms and Axura has so far been my favorite

I really want to install one of these, I am also sick of the Gallery lag and random reboots.

Is it easy to undo if I am unsatisfied ?
I see plenty of help installing the ROMs on xda, but not what do do if you are not happy.

Will I have to keep checking xda for updates to the ROM ? I'd love the faster phone, but I dont want to dedicate my life to keeping up to date on the latest release. That's why I have been waiting for the OTA or official Kies update to be announced, but my patience is wearing thin.

I have recommended android phones to plenty of people, and now they are actually getting them. I'm embarrassed to tell them "your phone can do some really cool things, but I cant show you because mine can't do them yet"

You can always use ODIN to flash back to the stock ROM (JFD for original, or JI6 for the OTA update)

If you flash with ODIN, you do NOT need to be rooted first. You just need a Windows machine, ODIN, and the ROM's files.

If you flash with Clockwork, then yes, you need to be rooted FIRST.

It's generally a good idea to flash back to stock if you decide to change up, just to make sure that you don't leave anything behind that could interfere with the new ROM.

I used ODIN in the past to fix my phone when it was all locked up. Can I flash FROYO with ODIN? Is there a link for the file?

Check xda, there are multiple threads about flashing with odin or CWM.

I would seriously recommend flashing back to stock with odin before flashing any new roms. It may not be necissary but its what I do.

update: I flashed the "final" version of Nero v3 with the voodoo lag fix and its blowing Axura outta the water. I forgot to charge my phone over night after flashing it and the battery has lasted me till 7 pm with light to moderate use today at work. Did I mention that this ROM and lagfix are blazing fast. I am getting over 1500 quadrant score and flash pages load hella fast. The one thing that I hate is that it uses the new market but the speed more than makes up for that

Dont you lose a lot of settings when you flash with ODIN ?
I saw some youtube instructions and it's looks like the homescreens etc go back to factory settings.
I like how I have my phone set up.
Isnt it annoying to have to re-do that everytime you flash a new ROM ?

Titanium Backup is your friend. You do lose somethings like widgets but all that is simple as hell to replace.

I hate this phone stock. I was rooted and rom'd since day one and I only undid everything when I heard about Samsucks OTA update. Not only did it not fix any GPS problem, it made the phone worse. I went through 3 Vibrants in a period of a week.

Wow, the Nero v3 ROM is fast and made my Vibrant soooo much better! I ended up giving the phone to my wife and she loves it. I had some issues with the install, but just had to redo some steps until the install was completed. Has anyone experienced any issues yet on this ROM?

I put Nero v3 on my phone 2 days ago.
I keep getting an error when I use the google search widget. The error clears and doesn't seem to affect my tasks, so I'm not really sure what's going on there. Also, I uploaded a photo to my facebook page yesterday, and went into my gallery while it was uploading. I thought the phone was crashed, but after about 10 seconds, everything started working again.

I'm going to stick with it a few more days, then give Axura a shot.

I just flashed to the Nero v3 touchwiz edition and it seems to be great. Well, the first time bluetooth kept acting up so I used oden to flash back to stock then flashed it again and it works good now.

I'm enjoying my phone so much more since I rooted and flashed Nero v3. I had flashed the stock FROYO ROM, then flashed Nero v3. I have since flashed back to stock with ODIN and re-flashed Nero v3. The result is super battery life and a very snappy phone.

Go Root!!!
