I have had my HTC EVO 4G for a year now. I am finally starting to really get into the really cool things this phone can do. I am considering root, but am not interested in that as much right now because of no computer at the moment as well as I still have another that my phone is under contract with Sprint. Sooo... Using ##codes, msl number, and/or anything else, what are ALL the modifications that I can/should/need to make!???

And i highly recommend rooting. You can do much more with root.

I'll +1 to rooting as long as you know what you're getting into. The new ota made it a little more difficult to achieve full root with S-OFF. Unlocking the bootloader isn't bad through htcdev. 
As far as customizing you can download a launcher to customize your home screens. Try out Go Launcher or Launcher Pro. Check out the Mario theme thread in my signature, it'll give you an idea what you can do without root.
