Root I'm ready to root

Hi
So I have my Desire for about 8 months and it gets bit booring and I would like to root and put on new nice ROM with cool icons, not like Android original ones which are difrent from each other.
How long time does it take to root and install new ROM?
What ROM would you recommend?
How safe is it?
Can you link me to any rooting instructions?

There are several ROMs to try and it is all personal perference.
Look for some discussion here: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/339974-other-than-cm7-any-other-good-roms.html

If you like to keep HTC Sense UI, a starting ROM is LeeDroid.

Haven't rooted yet, but soon I'll do it when I have more free time.
I think I'll go with RCMix S v1.7.2 Evolutionary Sense or Robo's RCMixS ROM.
When I root, what if I want to go back on defult HTC Desire ROM, can I do that? And what about updates?

just wow, I wached video on youtube about RCMix ROM with Sense 3.0 I love it, I'll start root right now, hope it works

ok, so I got to point where at 0:50 in this video - YouTube - ‪[VIDEO TUTORIAL] NOOB PROOF GSM HTC DESIRE GUIDE PT.5 NANDROID BACKUPS‬‏ I have to push power to get into backup & recovery but all I get is black screen. What should I do to get it running? I have done all what he told in his videos from start.

You press power to select recovery from the HBOOT screen (white). Once you are in recovery (black, green text) you use the trackpad to select, same as when Android is running.

Pressing power when in recovery just turns the screen off.

Which is why the rooting faq states to use the trackball. I put a lot of effort into writing that. Does anyone actually read it?!
