I'm starting to hate my Droid

My call quality is very good unless I try and shoulder the phone, which means holding the phone with shoulder and ear to talk as soon as I do this the person that I am talking to says that i get muffled I dont know why as the hole for the mouth piece is not covered I do have a case on it had the body glove it did it now I have the other case that does not have the clip on it and it does the same thing. I also have a issue with the bluetooth in the car 04 bmw 5 series connects fine and downloads all info perfectly but when I am talking i constantly get a break up kinda like a buzz a which point I can not hear the other person then it clears up almost like clock work every 10 to 15 seconds of the entire conversation. It does not do this with my moto bluetooth head set S1 or any other bluetooth phone in my car just the droid any help or sugestions

This has been discussed before. It should go in a FAQ thread (...it may already be in one) because it's one of very few widespread complaints about the Droid.

When I first got my Droid, I immediately ordered a two piece plastic cover off Ebay. It was dirt cheap, fits like a glove, and I was really very happy with it.

My wife got our Droids at the same time, and she bought a similar plastic case at the Verizon store. I wanted something a little different than what they had, so I got one off Ebay. Bothe are two piece plastic cases that clip to the bezel on the front & back of the phone.
At first, I didn't really use the phone too awful much as a phone. I was just really busy playing with my new toy. But after a while, it became obvious there was a problem, as everyone was asking me to repeat myself. Funny thing was that I had been talking about how great the phone was to all my friends, and most didn't want to burst my bubble by telling me how much the receiving end sound quality sucked for them! lol
So I looked at my wife's Droid, and saw that her case (Verizon Store bought case) had a notch cut out where the mic is, and my Ebay case didn't. So I filed a small notch in the bezel and put it back on the phone.
There seemed to be an immediate improvement. But as time went on, both my wife & I were still getting complaints from others about sounding muffled.

As it turns out, there is a secondary microphone on the back (top) of the phone that is for noise cancellation. When this is covered, we Droid users apparently sound like we have a sock in our mouth.
Both my wife's Verizon Store bought case and my Ebay cheep-o case do not have a hole in the back to let that mic breathe.
I've since carried my Droid commando in a belt case, and now I sound crystal clear.
This secondary mic is apparently very sensitive, and if your hand covers it while you talk, it can have the same effect.

I have NOT done any actual testing to confirm this, but this seems to have fixed my issue.

Thanks for all the input. As I stated earlier, I don't have a case on it, I do however have big hands, maybe I'm covering said 2nd mic on rear?? Where is that mic anyway??

Looking at the back of the phone, it's about 2 mm left of the cent at the top most seem in the construction where the back bezel meets the thinnest strip of plastic above the camer lens strip. It's a VERY small rectangular notch, barely noticable unless you look for it.

Report back if this makes a difference for you.
If I get some time, I'd like to do some testing about this between my Droid and my wife's. I often forget have the luxury of having two at my disposal for testing such things.

Oh yeah, wow that is tiny. Well I don't think I'm covering that while talking so I guess I'll make another trip to the VZW store.

Or just order the N1 lol

tried everything to fix my droid so that i didnt sound muffled to others..turns out--it is the mouth piece on the back!! when i took off the cover, people can hear what im saying!! apparently i dont sound as good as i did before on my old phone, but i dont sound muffled anymore..hope that helps!!

with the seidio cases, there is a small cutout on the back for this :), just throwing that out there.

Well now on to round two..... I'm not receiving emails and while I'm on the phone the handset is getting very warm, almost too warm for my ear. Ughhh

What gives? I think I have a lemon lol

I've had a few people say I sound muffled but it seems to solve the problem when I move the mic closer to my mouth. I've been assuming the Droid just has a harder time hearing when the mic is farther away.

This happens to me all the time. If I don't have the microphone directly in line with my mouth, people can't hear me. If I'm laying down and the phone slides a little down my cheek, I continuously hear "I cant hear you!" even though its less than 3 inches from my mouth.

When in speaker mode however, its extremely effective.

I dislike the mic.

I think you have a bad Droid. I think I have a bad one too! After reading your post, and the many replies, I too am going today to replace my Droid. I have had many similar complaints from others, including my wife ;). Take their advice. Exchange the Droid for a new one.

Wow sorry i did not jump in this post earlier. I found that like SK said its the mic on the back. The only time someone cannot hear me is when i shoulder the phone. And as soon as i grab the phone in my hand they can hear me fine. I even tested while on the phone with VZW and she was like wow all that from putting it on your shoulder. (she had no idea there was a mic on the back of the phone.)

Here is a good thread on this issue
