Gmail is the only way I know and likely the best. If you don't want your phone contacts with your email contacts or vice versa, import them into gmail as their own group, or make a new gmail account just for that.
Android's are a Google operating system. Gmail is part of Google. Gmail uses contacts. All contacts imported will end up part of Gmail.
I went to Verizon's "My Verizon" website and downloaded all the contacts into an CSV file. I then imported all those into my PC's Gmail account. And since Gmail is part of the Android system, within minutes all those contacts were automatically in my Android phone.
