Important Information for Everyone with this Phone Directly from HTC Escalation

It's even worse for me. I live in a bad signal area, which triggers the bug every few minutes very easily, so I'm force to use Gmail to make just about all my calls as well

I think the bad signal may be more your issue than anything...if you have bad coverage that is your own fault for not looking at a coverage map before you started, or looking into where the towers are located in your specific area.

However if you have bad coverage then that is enough of a reason to switch carriers.

However the amount of anti-Vm/HTC FUD that this thread seems the be generating is counter productive towards fixing the issue. It is also especially counter productive towards bringing developers to this platform.

Now that we know there is an issue, it is not a good idea to simply jump ship, its a better idea to make it a well known issue and force HTC to do something about it.

this is somewhat off topic but as someone that just got his data disconnected from t mobile for tethering i found this article very interesting.i saw the link in the g3 forum.
Let my Wi-Fi go: FCC rules Verizon can't charge for Wi-Fi tethering | ZDNet

the reason why i said it is somewhat off topic is because just like verizon did something they knew they couldnt sprint(vm) had no problem releasing a phone they knew had problems since there are plenty of posts from people with the evo 3d with the same errors.

and yes i know that article has nothing to do with tmobile and they had every right to ban data from me

I haven't been counter-productive. I spent the greater part of over two weeks with constant calls to VM and HTC to bring you the information I've brought you in this thread. You should be thanking me. I can't believe I'm getting this kind of bull on this forum. I might delete my account on this forum if I get enough backlash for actually trying to do something USEFUL for this community.

And as for living in a low-signal area? Doesn't matter at all. I used to hold phone calls and send texts just fine with my Optimus V in the EXACT same location I'm in right now. If you read through my other thread you'd know that. Don't assume bull.

Still pretty dumb that they banned data from you. Will they give you data again next month? I've read that using rooted apps tends to cause what is using your data appear invisible to the carrier, and thus would probably be safer.

not sure but this was my last month with them anyways.i was thinking about getting a used s2 and keeping both plans(vm and tmobile) but that money went elsewhere

im also not sure if this means anything but since i just get redirected to my account if i use the web i decided to check it out and it has a red exclamation mark next to my next billing date.i never checked the my account page before so who knows maybe its there every month or maybe they wont let me continue service with them when this billing cycle is over.

Let me ask you guys something about the Nexus.

I wear one on my hip for most of the day, and I demo it regularly. Honestly it doesn't impress me very much. It's not that smooth. The launcher is a little laggier than the Evo V it seems even. And the Nexus only gets a quadrant bench of about 2500, while I'm almost at 4000 with my Evo V.

The processor is still a 1.2 GHz dual core, with a gig of RAM in it...

Other than JB, and the screen, what makes you guys like it so much?

It's pure, and the hardware design makes so much sense. The point of a Nexus device is entirely the modification scene. Unlike the EVO V, the Nexus has a bootloader that you can unlock with no code necessary for submission. It is extremely modifiable, and gets Google's latest Android updates first before anything else does, save other Nexus devices. And if it seems to slow to you, you can overclock it quite easily with custom kernels. Plus, Nexus devices are by definition developer-grade and are designed for app development. They're the standard device that developers will use to test their apps on, which just about guarantees compatibility with most apps in existence. In addition to that, the device is something you can keep for a very long time due to the timely updates Google releases and constant Android development of ROMs and kernels all over the place. To my knowledge, there are more ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus than there are for any other device I've seen. In addition to that, some people are still using the Nexus S, and it works great for them. Nexus devices are, IMO, the Android experience the way it should be. Stock, and heavily modifiable by the user if necessary.

:( Really??? Since you demo one you must be using the verizon or sprint one....but for the GSM model

WORLD PHONE- used on att and t-mobile without unlocking! and can be used internationally

GOOGLE DEVICE- meaning it will have the latest updates and SHOULD last the next 2-3 years in receiving updates(even the nexus one has ICS)

DEV SUPPORT- ANY well named dev works on the nexus for custom support! actually raising the length of the phone for 1-2 years!

PRICE- 350 for a phone that will last you 2-4 years depending on your level of comfort of rooting and flashing.

Look at iphone 3g users!(3gs users will fill the pain shortly) perfectly running phone but cause devs for ios have updated their apps to run the newer ios leaving them to upgrade their phone just to use facebook or any well known app in the app store! (android has follow suite as well)

I do want the evo v dont get me wrong, but the nexus is still a option if att and t-mobile work well in your area! And like my friend we were talking today actually about how he says we should just buy google only devices knowing they will last well worth our money worth.

like the gs2 do you think it will get jellybean? Maybe, but knowing these companies and with the gs3 out it wouldnt suprise me to see it suck on ics! With the specs of the gs2 there's no reason people should upgrade to the gs3...BUT they will, to have the latest and greatest....sad really!

Completely, completely agree with you here.

This issue is well known. Metal has been "documenting" here. I get the same radio interface error as well. Google search and you'll see it happens mostly on Evo 3D and Evo 4G. Metal may have bad coverage, but I get awesome coverage. By awesome, I can see the antenna. By my guess, the antenna is within 2000 feet from my apt in NYC. I get -66 to -75dBm. Always full bar of signal.

Finally HTC admits to me on the phone there is a possible problem. They won't tell me if there will be a fix, but they are working on it. No eta on the fix.

BTW, I've just posted in Metal's other thread (Radio interface fix) that I had severe problem last night with sending text/making calls. I might have found a temporary fix. Unfortunately it will not be for everyone.

I recall someone claiming when they are on 4G, they had no problem. So instead of 3G, I switched to 4G. With 3G, it was very bad last night. With 4G, everything worked GREAT. My signal when I checked was -67dBm.

If this is the "solution", I think I can live with this phone then.

Did you actually get 4G service or was it just the radio that you switched on? I've had the bug occur for me when I had 4G signal.

I have 4G service. I did see signal fluctuation ONCE after turning on 4G. However, it flashed quickly and reconnect. I can always recreate the radio error by firing off texts in quick succession. Last night, after I turned on 4G, I fire off 10+ texts in about a minute, no problem. I was super excited. I am going to test a few more times.

Since not everyone gets 4G, that's why I say this may not be a solution for all. Actually, I don't think this is the right fix, but a temp solution for me. I still prefer the whole bug issue gets fixed.

I refer you all to my original post months ago about this issue. As the old saying goes... TOLD YOU SO! Seriously though this issue will never get resolved unfortunately there's too much business and politics involved. Don't hold your breaths and move on to another phone. I moved to verizon with a razr maxx and it's waaaaay better.

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-v-4g/569643-i-too-returned-my-evo-signal-issues.html

We'll see if this issue gets resolved or not. This is mainly HTC problem, not VM. HTC claimed they are working on it. IF I don't see a fix by, say, October, it won't matter who the provider is. I will never get an HTC phone in the future.

I've used all big 4 network (Verizon, ATT/Cingular, Sprint, TMo).

If money were not an issue, I'd get Galaxy 3 and Verizon's most expensive plan. Unfortunately, I have a budget. ATT is not reliable (actually worse, personal experience and friends) in NYC. TMobile is about as reliable as Sprint; I was on TMo before switching to VM.

Yup, I get what I paid for. However, I also don't have to worry about payment every month.

If we're all talking about development and ROMs here, saying the Nexus is a great device because of it's software doesn't seem to make much sense to me. If having a bare version of Android is what makes the Nexus a hit, then CM9/10 on the Evo V would make the phone comparable to a ICS/JB Nexus minus a few hardware specs. And the majority of people buying phones outright and considering these options will be rooting/flashing anyway, so I guess that's where my confusion sets in. I guess if I actually owned one and could test it out 24 hours a day, I might be able to say great things about it. I don't know if I want to up my plan rate by switching to T-Mobile, pay $50 extra for the pone, and only get 100 minutes...for something that only has a nicer screen and has stock Android on it. I'll give the devs here a few more weeks to see if we get cyanogenmod on the Evo first.

It's a Nexus activated on Verizon that I wear by the way.

Ew...that one doesn't have Jelly Bean yet. I just got my Play Store Nexus today. Destroys the EVO V. You do know the 1.2 GHz TI OMAP 4460 is significantly faster per clock than the Snapdragon S3 MSM8660 in the EVO I hope.

But you see we don't have CM9 yet and the nexus is already on jellybean. The lure of the nexus is you always have the latest and greatest as soon as it is released, no waiting.

Wow, how'd you manage that? Are you signing up for a contract plan, if I may ask? According to a service rep, the Galaxy S III doesn't work on their prepaid plans. I can't make myself sign up for any contract plan (yet), as bad as some of these prepaid carrier issues may be, I feel like I'm signing my soul away.
Yes, it's a 2-year contract. I look at it as that's 2 years I don't have to mess with it as I am completely happy with it (if I weren't, I have 14 days to "undo").

First, I ran the numbers: Evo V cost ($644) + 24 months VM service ($35+$45 plans) against other options. Since Evo V and SIII aren't apples-to-apples, I used SIII cost ($1330) + 24 months VM service against zero SIII cost with 24 months VZW service, the $10-$20/mo. more was worth it to me. (The SIII is far better than the Evo V 4G and VZW's network is far better than Sprint's and we have unlimited minutes vs. 300/1200; caveat: this is the 1GB data plan but we never go anywhere near that due to WiFi.)

Having what I wanted in mind, I went to VZW's web site and hit "chat now". I figure online sales reps would be a little more accommodating since the customer isn't invested and its too easy to lose them. I asked about monthly prices and said I couldn't justify both, double the monthly cost and the device cost; I asked if she could waive the device cost. She said she would.

At this point, 1) I didn't know what colour my wife wanted and 2) I didn't quite trust the online process, for if things didn't go as stated, I wouldn't have a face to deal with. Therefore, I stated I was unsure of colours and that I would take a look and return. I copied the chat transcript and pasted it into Evernote so it would be handy on my phone.

I went to the local Verizon store and did the same routine, showing my Evo V and stating that it only costs $70/mo for two. I stated that if the SIIIs were fully subsidised, I would sign a contract today and even buy some accessories (with VZW's discount, online prices aren't any better). She said she could ask but the answer would likely be, "no".

"The salesman online said she would waive the device cost".
"Really?" She was thinking....
"Here's the transcript", I said as I handed her the Evernote copy, highlighting that part.
She took that to her manager, he talked to the district manager and he came out and said he'll do it. He also asked if I could e-mail him a copy of that (not for my sale but for future ones--I assumed there'd be issues with brick-and-mortar stores having hands tied and competing with online sales).

My sales rep was very nice and pleasant as was the manager; it was a pleasant experience all-around. Additionally, I bought three OEM docks, the OEM flip-cover case, and an external battery, 4000mAh--at or better than online prices (Amazon price-check app FTW!).

I recommend deciding first what is important to you/priorities, what things are worth to you/what you are willing to pay for any product/service. (i.e. saving ~$15/mo. isn't worth the outages and hassle to me because spending $87/mo. + $644 for something that works 3/4 the time is not something I can do and sleep at night.)

The bottom line is the bottom line: it would have been foolish for VZW to lose a new 2-year (or longer if they have any faith in their service) customer. If the first salesman can't understand that, move on to the next (which I didn't have to do).

I think the bad signal may be more your issue than anything...if you have bad coverage that is your own fault for not looking at a coverage map before you started, or looking into where the towers are located in your specific area.
That statement makes many assumptions. The brochure doesn't always reflect reality. Sure, Sprint has towers covering my area but that doesn't mean they work well (their network doesn't work as well as it used to here). I stated my experience as it weighed in my decision (and is relevant to troubleshooting this problem); ones with excellent Sprint/VM coverage will likely see it differently or not have this problem at all.

However the amount of anti-Vm/HTC FUD that this thread seems the be generating is counter productive towards fixing the issue.
There is nothing we can do to fix it; it is completely out of our hands. That isn't fear, that's acceptance.
Thanks to this forum, those on the fence have accurate information to make an informed decision rather than one based on false hope or denial. That is neither uncertainty nor doubt.

Now that we know there is an issue, it is not a good idea to simply jump ship, its a better idea to make it a well known issue and force HTC to do something about it.
What matters is that htc knew yet here we are and either Sprint/VM didn't know or chose not to reveal it (I'm banking on the latter). These prolong the issue, not fix it; knowledge doesn't fix things, actions do.

I don't know what position you think we're in to force htc into anything. (I'm not suggesting "leave it alone" either, just be realistic about it.)

I have no faith that this will be fixed before my return window closes, so if anyone else in in the same or similar boat, they may wish to consider that, lest they have a $300 SD card adapter they aren't happy with and regret keeping.

I for one will be porting my number to T-Mobile prepaid @ $30 a month and add minutes whenever necessary, with the fabulous and all-powerful Jelly Bean loaded Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I'm done with this VM garbage.

That's exactly what I did after unsuccessfully trying VM's EVO V 4G. Don't blame you one bit and that Nexus will perform beautifully. I went with TMO's $30 5GB/4G plan and couldn't be happier. I'm constantly seeing 10 mbps speeds on TMO 4G. The difference between VM and TMO is like night and day.

I should have never even tried VM and went with TMO in the first place.

Yeah, but for people who use their phone frequently, it's not that great. Don't try and say the simple fix is to use Google Voice either.

How much of a PITA will it be for you to have 100 minutes, disable your voicemail, use Google Voice, have to have two phone numbers, and rely on your data coverage for your calls when you run out of minutes? Is a Nexus worth that too?

Sms error fix thread with possible working solution using modified Sprint flash--> http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?p=4749693

Just saying...
I don't have the problem as bad as my wife (probably because I don't text as much) but if this will fix the issue then it will probably become a standard step for people who root and Rom to improve functionality like me. I noticed these phones don't have the signal and 3g abilities my old optimus v did but I had a feeling this could be fixed.
I'm just glad there are people willing to put some effort into actually fixing a problem so others who also decided to wait and see can use the phone they purchased the way it was meant to be used
