To all of those upset with the probability you are not getting the gingerbread ota update and thinking of rooting, please do not jump into this feet first.

Please go to the root sub forum and read the links in the "all about rooting" sticky thread first.

We try to do our best to help but its much harder to help people who havent done their research. As there are only a few of us at hand, given this news may sway many towards the decision of rooting, I must respectfully request you read as much as you can, as many times as you can.

Please post threads in the root sub forum asking questions about what you don't understand. It's easier for us to help you get it right than it is to fix things that have gone wrong.

Please be sensible about this and read read read/ask ask ask

So very true Dan. Research counts for everything in this game. Took me about 2 months of solid reading of every advice thread I could lay my eyes on.

Even after I rooted, I still came to Dan, and the other 'droid experts when I wanted to go down the S-OFF road a few weeks back.

They're great guys with ALOT of knowledge, but they're not here all the time.

Do your research. Read everything you can. Look at the diferant ways of rooting, and find one that's best for your own level of expertise. Unrevoked was my weapon of choice.

And most importantly of all.

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR ADVICE.

I've got a question.

I've rooted and found that easy enough but never messed around with RUUs. Can I run the RUU even though I have a custom ROM installed? (Oxygen)

Also, how would you recommend backing up and restoring data? Google for contacts/calendar and Titanium Backup/MyBackup Pro for everything else?

a RUU wipes everything on there and returns to stock. Why would you do that though? Just flash one of the many rooted versions available, such as Teppic74's

Didn't realise there were rooted versions of it out already!

I'm not really that bothered about installing sense I just miss a couple of things like the half decent mail app!

I spent a few weeks reading SUroot's FAQ and guide over and over and also watched a couple of the rooting for noob's video guides. At first i was very confused but then it just seemed to make sense and when i actually rooted etc using the new Revolutionary method it really was very simple and easy to follow. Now i have my Desire rooted, s-off ,gparted and running Insertcoin A2SD+ rom i am so happy.. My Desire has been injected with a total new lease of lfe.. It does more , is faster, runs Gingerbread with a load of new sense 3 stuff and has so much memory now and incredible amount of space for apps. Thanks for your confidence building review of rooting.

I've got a t-mobile uk branded Desire, that I "upgraded" to Froyo, but since then I cannot run any app properly using GPS - not one app locks on to the satellites. I've tried fixing it using all the remove sim, remove battery techniques but no joy.

So, I'm into debranding it. Can you confirm that apps that use GPS run OK? In particular, Google Maps.

No reason GPS won't work after debranding. If your problem started with a T-Mobile upgrade to Froyo, it's not the "Froyo" part of that that was the problem

My phone was bought unbranded, and GPS worked fine then. It was upgraded to Froyo and still worked (that was unbranded Froyo, not a network update). Since rooting and installing custom ROMs it's still worked - main difference is that it's quicker locking on now than it was with stock firmware.
