Help Incoming calls sent to voicemail while texting

My wife and I both have Captivates (2.2). Her phone has a specific problem that mine doesn't. While texting, incoming calls are not displayed on the screen and the call is sent straight to voicemail. Also, the incoming call isn't logged. The only way she knows if someone called is if a voicemail is left.

I can't find a setting that would affect this. Is this fixable? It sorta sucks to miss calls and not know it.
