Help Incompatibility with PC

This is my first smartphone and I confess to not being a very technical person.

I've taken some photos and would like to download them to my PC I connected the two by USB and although things seemed at first to be going okay I keep being told that the device drive hasn't downloaded properly. Further investigation on a compatibility site shows that this device isn't compatible with window 7. Can I get round this?

I don't have an SD card.

I have ditched Windows because of similar issues and my Linux Mint does this super easy. If you can lay your hands on a Linux LiveDVD, boot your computer with that, connect the USB cable in MTP mode and you will easily be able to copy the images over to your PC.
