Help Inconsistent Battery Life

crex43

Newbie
I've had my *non-rooted* HTC Incredible for about four months. I have the standard OEM battery that came with the phone. I typically charge my battery overnight (11pm to 7:30am) using standard charging procedure (no bump charge). I work from 8:30a to 5:00p and typically use my phone for a total of ten to fifteen minutes during that time for quick text messages or a visit to the Facebook app. I use the phone more heavily after work until I put it on the charger, putting about an hour of activity checking e-mail, texting, Facebooking, and playing a few games, but I am by no means a heavy user.

Until recently, for at least the past month the batter charge would be as high as 80% and as low as 60% at 5pm, and would hit 30%-20% at 10pm, but since last week (ironically ever since Verizon made their iPhone announcement) my phone has been dying around 7 or 8pm each day. For example, I took my phone off my charger this morning at 7:30a and it is 10:30 and I am already at 70%, where I would normally be at 90%. There have been no changes in my charging habits or use - just changes in battery life.

This is not the first period of time where my battery seems to be conking out earlier than it typically does. I'd say there are a few days each month where the phone does this, but this is the first time it has done it for a prolonged period of time and it's frustrating that the battery is so inconsistent, especially when there have been days I can coax twenty hours out of the battery, and others where I can barely get through the workday.

Does anyone know what might be causing this, or can point me to some diagnostic apps I can use to figure out what may be creating a difference in my battery life?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

The best advice I can give you at the moment would be first to check if your phone is sleeping properly by comparing System Up Time to System Awake time (they should not be the same or even that close)! And if your phone is not sleeping to then download an App called Spare Parts (free in the market) to help determine if something is keeping your phone awake!

There are also many battery threads here that should contain more information that you may be looking for, here are just a few examples:

Good Luck!!

P.S. Something just came to me when you mention "within the last month"!! You probably have the new Facebook App?? There are many, many reports of it keeping phones awake!!

Might be something to think about!

I will download Spare Parts and see what that does.

UPDATE:
I am now at 40%. Here are some battery stats:

Up Time: 13:48:09
Awake Time: 5:43:17

Cell Standby - 40%
Phone Idle - 39%
Android System - 14%
Display - 4%
Android.Process.Acore - 3%

I have maybe used my phone for a total of 15 minutes today. Anything seem out of whack?

That's alot of cell standby. I'm guessing you have really low signal most of the time?

Is there wifi at work?

I don't think the signal is too terribly low at work. And previously my phone would last about 20 hrs on a weekday at the same workplace.

As jayjay1122 recommended, I downloaded Spare Parts. It shows Facebook is responsible for 4h, 22m, and 50s of partial wake usage. Ever since I deactivated the "Facebook for HTC Sense" sync items, the battery has been discharging much more slowly (it is currently only on Facebook app for syncing).
