Got my HTC Fantasmagorical today, figured I'd pass along a few observations. I'm coming from an Eris, so some of these will be WRT that:
- I don't like where they put the USB port. It's on the side, so if you are trying to use it while it's charging, the cord gets in the way. The Eris' location, on the bottom, was more convenient. I'm assuming it's this way to support some future desktop dock that allows it to lay on it's side like the Droid.
- The A/C adapter that comes with it is not nearly as nice as the one with the Eris. The Eris one puts the USB port 90 degrees from the A/C, but this one is fully straight from USB to A/C, so if you plug it directly into a wall, you'll need about 3.5" of clearance. No idea why they'd have done that except to save money.
- It DOES use MicroUSB, not the MiniUSB like the Eris, that sucks since I already have a bunch of MiniUSB cables, oh well.
- It DOES have a 2GB MicroSD card. SanDisk, in retail package, with SD adapter. Likely because apps are having a hard time with the 8GB. Some apps (Footprints for one) didn't want to launch w/o throwing a "Please insert SD card" warning. So I guess this means that, even though it has 8GB of storage, it's really only a 2GB machine (until these apps get fixed)...
- Navigation app renamed to Car Panel
- It's definitely faster. Doesn't have any of the keyboard, rotation, or general lag that my Eris had.
- The trackpad is no big deal. Works just like the ball, even feels kinda like it due to the grooves etched around it
- BUT, I am going to miss the ball for notifications. It was cool to have the ball flash, and I'm sure even more cool if it's multicolor. This is more no-frills
- I really miss the call/end hard buttons
- Screen is gorgeous inside, totally unusable in the sun
- Rather than gaining more real-estate on the screen, it feels like things are a little larger than on the Eris. Might just be in my head.
- It definately feels lighter and thinner, but longer, which of course, it is, but not by much.
- Speakerphone is about like the Eris. Kind of weak, definately compared to the LG-VX8300 I've been using the last few weeks. Also it seems the only way to bring the display back when in speakerphone mode is the on/off button.
- The stock keyboard has replaced the settings button (left of the spacebar) with a microphone (long press to get the settings). Still a stupid place since accidentally hitting it halts all typing and brings up a dialog
- Still no SEND on the stock keyboard in landsape mode, big FAIL...
Incidentally, it does NOT fit in a Moto Droid car adapter, no idea on the dock though.
