Incredible vs. iPhone 3GS

2 months is a lot different than nearly a year...it's basic math

You generally have cell phones released in groups. It's unfair to compare a smartphone from one group of phones to one that is several groups behind. The new iPhone 4G should "up" the iPhone hardware enough so that it will be on competing level with the new phones that have come out since its last release.

I'm not doubting that 2 months is different than "nearly a year." My point remains: comparing the latest offering from competitors is fair in my opinion.

Especially because the iphone is a platform unto itself, and a pretty popular one at that. You can squabble over which OS is better, and this often comes down to which devices use it, but the iphone is both rolled into one. It's a natural benchmark for everything and there's only one newest iphone at any given time; if nothing else, the iphone comparison is a good indicator as to whether you will risk buyer's remorse with your new smartphone.

And that's definitely not the case with the Dinc. :D

And now we have the iPhone. My dad brags about how simple (read:crippled) it is, and I don't see why, because we've both been pretty well-versed in computers ever since he brought home a Tandy 1000 about 20 years ago. But he's a lawyer and I studied computer engineering, so I guess we've diverged a bit (he also bought an iPad) as far as what we want our computers, mobile or otherwise, to be capable of.

I also studied computer engineering.. yet I don't find it difficult to understand why people like apple. Of course, I don't get why people think linux is for the masses, either (Let's see my grandma figure out the library dependencies when trying to email kitten pics to her friends at the senior center)

Users love it, because it just works.. why does it work? Because they have provided a standardized platform with which to develop on (no wondering, does the user have a keyboard?).. Because they QA the crap out of everything they put out.. Because they provide a robust suite of 1st party apps at release time of new hardware.. Because they put a lot of money into developing an intuitive UI.. and most importantly, they are able to find something to capture every audience. Example - PopCap games may have been around for a while, but you'll never catch me lounging at home playing one. When I am at the airport with just my phone and a few minutes to kill, though, it is hard to beat Plants and Zombies.

Look at all of the features that iphone introduced that are now considered standard for smartphones. They hit the nail on the head.

Yes, I am dumping my iphone after 6 months, but it is because of AT&T, and not the iphone. Sure, you get bored of a device after 6 months, and I will enjoy free tethering, Flash, and turn-by-turn navigation, but again, my grandma doesn't know what any of those things are.

Speaking of the iPhone and everything.. Does anybody know whenish it is coming out and IF it will be for Verizon?

i was hoping to never hear the word iphone in this forum again.

Nothing personal to iphone users.. but the whole.. is it better than an iphone thing makes me want to vomit and then do a 2 girls one cup video of my own.

Noo!! That was almost absent from memory! Why! Could be the most disgusting video on the face of planet earth. and I am FROM planet earth. jesus christ is there a god.

Agreed, the iPhone is a good phone, no doubt about it. But when it's tied to the worst service I've ever experienced, the iPhone is about as useful as a paperweight.

I totally agree that Apple spends tons of money on capturing a massive audience. The proof, I think, can be found in their failures, ala ROKR, the first Macintosh Portable, the Newton, and the Macintosh TV (the first one). Apple was a pioneer with those failures, and I think the main reason why these products failed was due to their massive pricetags and the technology at the time.

EDIT:
Actually, now that I think about it, it's arguable that these products came out eventually in one form or another
- ROKR became the iPhone
- Macintosh Portable became the MacBook
- Newton became the iPad
- Macintosh TV...well...became the MacTV...still not sure if that's a success.

Wow, so many people bashing the Iphone.
Personally I have both the Iphone (business) and the Incredible for a personal phone.
This is the best of both worlds.
I use the Iphone for business and movies, music etc. Meanwhile it really "just works", and works well.

On the other hand, I use the Incredible for fun, communication with the family and also for music, movies etc.
Just depends on weather I am at work, home or mowing the lawn......
LOL
I wouldn't bash either device as they both have "VALUE", sure AT&T isn't good for everyone. But why blame the Iphone for that?
This is just my opinion, I know. But have fun with both. Learn all you can about both and enjoy the phone of your choice........

They really are the best of both worlds and do what works for you!
Thanks for letting me post!

Ppl can bash the iphone all they want. As soon as it's released on verizon, it will be verizon's best selling phone.

True. I have no great love for big red but it has hands down the best coverage in my area over the other carriers.

I've never owned an iPhone and understand why you object to padding Steve Jobs' bank account every time you buy a song or an app, but you must stipulate that the iPhone, while not without flaws, is a work of art and the gold standard for intuitiveness and usability.

From a business standpoint, you also have to admire Steve Jobs and Apple's attitude - "Here's our product. Sexy isn't it. Want it? OK, you're goiong to pay through the nose, no rebates, no discounts, and you're going to keep paying us for music, apps and even battery replacement for years to come. Don't like that? Screw off."

Not many companies can have that attitude and stay in business. I certainly can't. I have to kiss butt every day. :)

I just had the iphone 2wks ago. Switched over to ATT for it. Didnt last a week though becuase of ATT horrible service. But I gotta say. iphone is amazing. If it came to Verizon Id have one. I went with what was best avail for Verizon. But Incredible is still a great phone, minus that the battery life is not great.

You have to pay for music, apps and extended battery if you wanna longer charge on the INC also. So not sure what your point was with that. Google email was the only one that is working well for me, yahoo giving me problems on the Inc. So I had to switch to gmail. Thats an Apple like move by google.

IF it is to come to Verizon it will most likely come in the fall

I highly doubt it. My prediction is that there will be no Verizon phone this year. Why? iPhone sales are still killing it and I'm sure AT&T is Apple's bizznatch because no iPhone=no AT&T. Apple basically has its own telco company with the way things are set up. And look at the iPad. Another AT&T exclusive. It's a monopoly and they are always slow to change.

I will be shocked if a Verizon phone comes out this year. Shocked like Heidi Montag winning the Nobel award in medicine after discovering the cure for AIDS, 3 Golden Globes for her outstanding performances on The Hills, a Super Bowl ring after joining the Bengals as their new QB, and crushing Usain Bolt in the 100m. In high heels.

The new iphone 4g will be about 15%-30% faster than the incredible depending on app used IF they run the A4 chip at 1ghz. I wont be light years faster or anything. Android 2.1 and (2.2 coming very soon) will blow away Apples OS4.

The only thing Apple has going for it is better battery life due to the A4 chip using 45nm Mfring process vs the previous Gen 65nm that the snapdragon uses. But then again I can always get the 1750mah battery for the Incredible which is the same physical size as the OEM battery.

Im so happy the new Iphone was leaked now I can rest assure I made the right choice.

An iPhone with a 4Ghz dual-core processor, true native multi-tasking, front-facing cam, native tethering, the profile of a sheet of paper, and a coffee dispenser would not keep me from leaving AT&T.

LOL! Too funny.

Android 2.2 is rumored to include just-in-time (JIT) compiling which has the potential for an enormous speed boost, potentially 2-3x faster.

Chances are that has very little to do with Google and a lot to do with HTC dragging their feet over making a 2.1 Sense ROM that the Eris can run smoothly.

I suspect it may have more to do with marketing strategy and not wanting the Eris to have 2.1 too soon before the Incredible launch.

I agree, but it looks like the Inc takes the iPhone hands-down in nearly everything except battery life. It's nice to see :)

yeah...until the 4G comes out in a month or two.

don't get me wrong, I like my Inc but they next iPhone will own it.

From the few posts that I have seen from you today, I smell Apple fanboy. If that's the case, we don't need you here.

I am an impartial consumer.

I have 2 HTC phones. They make a nice product.

I bought the Incredible and gave my girlfriend my Eris. I did not have to buy the Incredible.

Would I get a Verizon iPhone? 90% yes.

Would I have bought the Incredible if I thought there was going to be a Verizon iPhone this year? 100% no.

The iPhone is a mature platform. Android is a copy of the smartphone concept Apple introduced.

That said, I do not know how iPhone users have managed without multitasking, but after owning the Eris understand why Apple has been reluctant to introduce it (performance and battery).
