Root Indulge w Basix/Electric Sheep Boot time is now super slow

I have Basix and Electric Sheep along with tons of apps, it seems that in the past couple weeks the boot time of the phone has slowed where its really annoying.

I haven't timed it but I am guessing the media scanner for system and external sd card don't even attempt to start running until the phone has been on for at least a minute or more. And when I say on, where it appears like its ready to use, all icons visible etc but nothing will respond until its has finished booting and running the media scans etc.

it always did the media scans before but they were much quicker and started as soon as the phone had booted.

I have tried clearing the dalvik cache in cw recovery, didn't seem to change things.

is there anything I can do to speed up the boot time? I know on older windows pc's you could msconfig and disable all the extra stuff that gets installed and tries to run right from the start. As far as the phone goes is there a file that can be edited or a program that can streamline the boot process?

I would guess it takes 3,4 maybe even 5 times longer to start now than it did when it was first loaded. And no I do not have lookout or any antivirus type programs that may be running a scan at startup.

Backup all apps with rom manager, titanium backup, or my backup pro, then i would suggest a reinstall of the rom.

One thing you could try before that is moving apps to your SD card that you don't use too often. Then you can always get an SD speed booster app.

Moving unnecessary apps to your SD card will improve boot up time and free up some speed.

Another thing you can do is to use Rom Toolbox (or similar app) and freeze apps you don't use too often. This way they don't run in the background, but they remain installed in your phone. If you want to use them again, simply defrost them.
 
thank you I will do that, I just did a complete backup of all apps after updating all of them about a week ago. I was kind of worried there's a problem with an app causing it and reinstalling the ROM then apps will just repeat the problem. It really only takes around 20-30 min to do it so its worth a try. I will move some of the ones I don't use often to the SD card, I have been a little hesitant to have any apps on it because twice in the life of my phone (since 8/2011) I have got a "your SD card is corrupt or not formatted" or something like that, had to format it and lost any pictures and things on it. After the 2nd time I try to make a habit to save a backup and move pictures/video to my PC every few weeks.

I also have had problem with an app disappearing once in a while, today i went to one of my screens where I have game icons for ones I play often and words with friends looked weird, clicked on it and got a this application is not installed message. I am not sure if they vanish for a specific reason or if somehow when its in my pocket things get pressed.. I really don't know. Its only happened about three times in the past few months. First time I was really confused looking for the icon now I just reinstall it.
 
one question I do have and I know its already answered in the thread about it, I am 99.9% positive the answer is no also, they're already telling me lets go lets go so I can't read that thread and its 187 replies right now.

if I decide to use the 2.2.2 image I don't think the phone will be rooted anymore..is there any way to install my backed up apps or do I have to get them one by one from the google dealio?
 
You could always do a data reset in CWM. Doing so will restore your phone to the state it was in when you first installed Basix & Electric Sheep. Do this from the recovery menu, NOT from the factory data reset in your settings!

Reboot into recovery, then wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache, then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache. After that, reboot and you should be able to restore your apps and go from there, and you won't lose your root. Backup your apps to your computer to be safe.

Doing that should clear up your problem but if not, then I would suggest reinstalling the ROM from scratch.

After you've reinstalled all your apps, I'd suggest moving unnecessary ones to the SD card. You can always speed up SD card speeds with ROM Toolbox.
 
I got it running quite a bit faster but its still not like it was in its best days. One thing I noticed and the only way I see it is if I backup all my apps using MyBackupRoot and then go to the restore options and scroll through the latest backup I made. I can see multiple versions of Apps...

there are a lot but for example I made a backup of all apps on 12-24... if I go to MyBackupRoot and choose restore apps&media and pick the 12-24 backup then scroll through the apps

chrome to phone appears three times..versions 2.3.0...2.3.1....2.3.2

Draw something free appears three times v 1.8.20...v1.11.11....v.1.11.77

as do many many of my apps.

obviously if I restore I would only choose the most current version. Since this was a backup of my phone are the older versions still installed and confusing the system?

if I go into system/apps where I can uninstall things I only see one version of any of my apps, but its obvious from the backup there is more hiding somewhere. Whether or not it hurts the way the phone runs I don't know...that's why I ask the experts.

hopefully someone still reads this forum and I made sense enough so you know what I am asking

Restore one app with multiple versions and see what happens, you can always uninstall, dont worry, you wont break it. :) you can always wipe data again in cwm and start over.

yes it is on the SD card plus I copy everything from that to a folder on my computer every few weeks to a month just in case the SD card isn't recognized and needs to be reformatted like it has once since I owned the phone. Worst part about that was a few of the pictures I lost, I try to back it up asap if there is anything of importance on there.


maybe I am looking at it in the wrong way but my point was the current backup was made from my phone now as it is performing less than ideal. When I choose restore from the current backup (not actually completing it but viewing things like I am going to restore from it) I see multiple versions of many apps. That means at least I think it does that multiple versions are installed in the phone and possibly confusing or slowing down everyday processes like booting up. It's almost like everything that has been updated still has the original versions plus each update... maybe that's how the android stuff works and it won't be a problem, it just seemed odd to me. I assumed any app that gets updated overwrites the previous I know multiple versions/choices on a PC would slow things down as it figures out what to use. It really has improved after flushing all the caches, fixing permissions etc.. but it still seems to take a long time to start up and actually dial from contacts etc...

when I am at home if its 4 or 5 min until everything is operational its not even noticed as long as things work when I choose them, its when I am out on the road and leaving a store or entering a restaurant and the phone is off when I remove it from my pocket...sometimes I can drive home and ask a question quicker than I boot it up and actually place a call..a few minutes isn't really that long but it is definitely frustrating when it wasn't that way before.

I really do have a lot of apps installed I don't use anymore, maybe making a list of what i do use then a complete fresh install of the rom and the latest clean install of apps from the store would be the best...but I am lazy and that sounds like it could be time consuming, might cut into drinking or gambling time one evening!!! lol

I prefer to work smarter not harder but when things get tough going back to basics is usually a safe plan. I am not sure how much longer I will keep this phone, probably at least until the S III's drop in price a little more, so for now I hope to keep this old thing running in the best form possible with help from the experts.

I actually used a friends old t mobile cell phone to place a call the other day and it was turned off. Hit the power button, dialed as it was starting and was actually talking to someone in I am guessing less than 30 seconds. These smart phones are convenient but are they actually that smart or just the next logical step to steer consumers toward after the laptop market pretty much out "tech'd" the average user... couple years back the hardware for the most part was way more capable for whatever than the average user..if the manufacturers want to sell the latest and greatest hoopla every quarter or year its time to steer people toward something other than laptops! Well my gripes about the industry, especially how the INDUSTRY LEADERS(won't toss an actual company under the bus because many do similar stuff but everyone knows who it is) run TV commercials about blah blah blah connect and share everything between 10 devices..blah blah.... "unlimited talk and text"....ummmm basic user John or Jane Doe has no idea what that commercial just said was they are screwed for using data between devices no matter how much the commercials lead them to believe its super cool to share everything between every device you or your family owns. Ok drunken rant is just about over, can you tell I was dropped off at home after a night out and just polished off a few more Margaritas before sleepy time? Much of this reply may be a little jumbled up, I was disconnected and had to copy n paste after using the back button and who knows what other alcohol induced errors happened. Before I get into a novel sized rant about how the demand for high speed connections developed and where the operating systems, the recording industry and the government with decision makers involved that really don't have a grasp of what has transpired or where its going I should probably go to sleep. good night or good morning depending where you are...guess its morning in all of the US.....thanks again for any help on the original topic

I finally made the time to redo it completely, I was going to install 2.2.2.2 or whatever the #is and install my apps but Hemidall would see my phone but come up with a usb error when I tried to actually write anything to it(I didn't go back and research if how to cure that is explained in the forums here, I am almost sure it is). It won't be too much longer until I replace the phone so I cleared everything I could in recovery mode, put basix and electric sheep back in fresh and made a list of my apps that were installed. The ones I still use I am downloading fresh from googleplay, not from a backup. I am about 50% maybe a little more through installing my apps and the phone works like a dream...well maybe a year or two old dream but there is no more 5 minutes until you can actually make a call when you restart it. I will make a current backup when everything is installed and hopefully live happily ever after....at least until I finally get an SIII
