Not sure what I've done but over the last few days links to ads have started to appear. The tiny little red cross appears on the top bar. The only way I can clear them is to drag the top bar down and clear them. How do they get there in the first place? I've checked google and my accounts aren't linked to my emails.

Apps installed. I've started to notice this on other people's phone. My brother would let his kids use his phone and download games, soon enough loads of ads were showing up on his notification bar regarding offers, sex, and what not. Best thing would be to look through your installed apps and remove unnecessary apps, or apps you think would be the cause.
Push advertising. Install Addons Detector from the Play Store, and scan for apps that include Push Ads. Uninstall those apps and this will stop.
