***initial nexus buyers!!!***

I have been reading the speculation thread for quite awhile, but have not posted because I didn't want to get too wrapped up in all of the speculation. I like to not worry about what can be, but what will be. Even so, this phone has had me very excited!

I have noticed a lot of people in the forum have never owned a Nexus device, so I will give my thoughts as a previous owner. If you are considering owning within a month or even two after launch, remember there WILL be issues! Some of your apps will not work properly with ICS, and there will be bugs to be worked out. Be aware some app developers may take longer (some much longer) to make their apps work with ICS. Be prepared to not have everything the way you have had it before, and have to wait for those things you are used to.

There will also most likely be issues with the phone, and ICS. It will most likely not be an easy experience, but Google is great at timely fixes. As a previous owner, I had to deal with these issues and I was still pleased with my experience. I will buy another Nexus again if it comes to Verizon, as I know the great support of the devices. I hope whomever buys one on launch or immediately after, knows there will be issues, but is willing to ride the initial wave without complaining too much as fixes will be extremely quick compared to other Android devices.

I am excited to get another Nexus as I had to give mine up when I moved to Verizon in order to avoid the death star. Good luck and don't shy away. I know many have bought their phones after their Android version has been out for many months. So don't give Nexus' a bad name if you don't think you can be an initial purchaser for the new OS and phone. I want the phones to keep on coming every holiday season!

I just had to thank your post. It's hilarious every time someone refers to AT&T as the "death star". It rings so true. :D

Good post, I was wondering how polished the first phone on a new os would be. Thanks for the insight. I'll still be buying this though.

It is funny. I was with AT&T before they first sold, and I had the same complaints then what I still hear people complaining about now. That is why I ran from T-Mobile as fast as I could when I heard of the possible acquisition. I wish they would have been bought out by Google. That would have been the best combo!

I'll be buying it as well. I have been waiting for this for about 6 months.

I've been waiting for it all of my life! At least until the next one comes out. Then that is the one I have been waiting for all of my life...

Honestly, I have the OG Droid. I have had no real issues with the phone. I have been using CM since about May 2010 (guess). It has been a great phone. It is oc'd to 1.2GHz I think and stable. It is showing its age.

I will be getting this phone and I do not expect many issues at all. Those that do exist will be corrected quickly by Google and the ROM makers will be at work quickly for this phone.

I got my OG Droid shorter after it came out in Nov. 2009. It was the first phone to have Android 2.0 and yes, there were many, many issues that later polished out over time. I'm sure the initial experience with Galaxy Nexus will be somewhat similar if not better, but I'd take it granted for getting a "bleeding edge" device. :)

I was first day OG Droid buyer, it had its setbacks. I will be buying this phone day 1 and requesting the day off from work. The Galaxy Nexus will have its own problems for sure. But honestly, name a phone that really didn't have a single thing wrong with it.

Exactly my thoughts. The difference for us will be the corrections to any issues will be quick and directly from google. That is why I will be buying it on release day and for full price. Also, I am glad to see so many people excited about the phone. I just wish I could take the day off like you to enjoy it. Everyone's excitement keeps my hopes up that google will keep making them.

I was #1 at my local VZW store for the OG Droid. I had no real issues with the phone other than SUE's (stupid user errors). If there are issues at launch, then people should complain. What is the point of launching a device that has known defects?

I will still be getting it because there is nothing else better and my OG is dying a quick death. I need an alternative. Razr, Nexus, Rezound will fill that need. If the 4S had 4G LTE, gorilla glass, and 4" screen, I might have gotten it already.

You couldn't pay me to sign a Verizon contract.
I don't understand the big deal about contracts, especially if its just you and no family plan. Whether I have a contract or not I still have the minimum data plan and the smallest voice plan. There is no reason to care about a long contract unless you want a new phone. One year just doesn't seem enough time in the phone world for anything to be a remarkable improvement. For example I got my Droid X in July 2010 and the Galaxy Nexus is likely going to come out in November, which is 16 months. Given the ability to do early upgrades on Verizon with two year contracts, not much patience is necessary and paying full price for a phone seems like a waste.

Yes they're to big for their own good. That's why at&t needs tmobile.Everything that's wrong with cellphone plans was started by Verizon.

Because a phone not launched is a phone not bought. I understand there shouldn't be major defects, but a company will likely release something with minor problems if they are found late in the development/manufacturing process.

Even Apple does this, which the media seems to love and claim is such a better experience than Android. Maybe they are better because they provide updates direct, instead of passing them down to OEMs.

Show me ANY product, more complex than a calculator, that has zero defects. I've been in computer/software engineering for ~30 years and I firmly believe there is no such thing.

When I first loaded GB on my Incredible it was the same thing lots of apps weren't optimized for it so I just had to kind of deal with it for the first few weeks but programs quickly got the fixes they need and it really wasn't too many programs that had trouble. I get more and more excited for this phone each day. I keep saying I"m not buying a phone till december but if this drops in november I might have a hard time not buying it right away

Compatibility should be quite good - Honeycomb has been around for a while lots of stuff has been optimised for it already. Every now and then you come across something that just plain doesn't work - but that's rare and pretty much restricted to things that do nonstandard things to start with.

I completely agree with you. All products have some issues. However, if there are major issues, it should be fixed before release.

As to your question/statement, I too have been in the computer/software engineering business for 15 years. I never thought a product would release without a defect. However, the group I worked in did develop one. I ran the Test organization and took pride in finding defects. After banging on the thing for 2 whole months from every angle possible, it was a defect free product/technology. The only way we got it to fail was taking it to extremes (over heating by 2x spec, destructive testing). I wish I could tell you the product, but I cannot. I guarantee you have used or seen it in your life.

Good Thread and outlook by the OP!

In the BIG picture of it all, the Nexus brand is all about Development, and the device it self is after all a developers phone!

Deff not for the faint of heart....

Good post. There will be a lot of initial complaints. I do hope this doesn't keep VZW away from future Nexus devices.

I am cool with this. I have been tinkering with my phones for a while now, trying out different software and experiencing different results, including bugs. I'm okay with having to get through the tangles. This device is going to be amazing and ICS is going to be even more so. Can't wait.

Thank you. After seeing everyone's responses, I am glad to see everyone so positive about ICS and the SGN. I hope all carriers get an opportunity for the phone as I believe giving buyers options is what makes Android great. Plus, it gives me a better opportunity for more nexus devices?
