Initial Thoughts?

El Presidente

Beware The Milky Pirate!
My initial thoughts (I've not really tested properly because it's still charging):

The screen is beautiful, like unbelievably beautiful, I can't get over how amazingly amazing it is. I'm going to have to take some new pics with this camera as the pics taken with the DHD just don't cut it when used as wall paper, you can see everything. I was sort of worried about the size, but it's the same width as my DHD in her otterbox, just a little taller. It doesn't feel uncomfortable in the pocket at all. I would liked it to have felt a little less plasticy, but it's still very well put together and feels like an expensive bit of kit. I tried the One S in the shop this morning and the X feels miles better.

The camera is fast, although as I'm still charging, I can't really test properly. I've a 3 year old and one of my main beefs with the camera on the DHD was it took so long to open the app, focus and take the pic, that by the time I'd got to take the pic, he'd stopped doing whatever I thought was cool. This won't happen with this handset.

I can take or leave Sense. I don't love it, but at the same time, I don't hate it with the venom that some people appear to. It's easily the nicest of the manufacturer overlays, but I still prefer vanilla. However, with the combination of 4 cores and a minimalistic approach, I think that's going to change. The UI is amazingly slick and very intuitive. Something I've always been impressed with when I've used Sense ROMs in the past is the contact management/linking. Sense has always been very good at recognising that names which don't always match exactly are the same person. I found AOSP ROMs cannot always tell the difference between Andy and Andrew so I'd end up having to link a load of contacts manually after a gmail/FB sync. I had to do it for about 3 contacts this time. It even managed to tell the difference between my mum and dad who sorta, kinda have the same name - Jan (Polish) and Jan (short for Janice). My only beef with Sense is that it's green, even if you change the theme, highlights, word suggestions etc are still green, blue is where the cool guys are.

I'm also not a fan of the fact that the battery is displayed as a bar, not as a percentage. I've got battery minder installed for that, but I'd like to not have to use a 3rd party app for it. It's not a HTC thing though, more of an Android thing in general.

On the whole though, very, very impressed so far and glad I waited for this over the G-Nexus! :D

How is everyone else finding it so far?

woot woot! Sooo jealous!

1) what colour?
2) oh yeah El Prez, did you have to pay anything when you picked it up? also....any bloatware? orange boot screens?

Got to say i'm mightily impressed with mine with what little use i've had with it so far.:D

And for my basic use, the camera will be awesome.

1 Voda app on phone, no branding on case, no boot logo, very happy.:D

Cheers Gents!

I've not really had long to play, but once it's off the charger, I plan on giving it a hammering, that's just what jumped out at me initially. It's sort of annoying not having Titanium to restore launcher settings etc, but I can live with that.

Grey, I wanted that anyway, but wouldn't have refused the white one! I didn't pay anything upfront and I'm

Absolutely gorgeous. After only a few hours playing my Desire screen seems tiny!
Beautiful screen and a pleasure to hold.
Had quite a few failed camera shots just showing an exclamation mark but video's fine. I'm probably doing something wrong since I'm on a steep learning curve with ICS.
Very impressed so far!

Well got mine today. Had a look at CPW, but their attitude was basically "well no we don't have a phone for you to test, perhaps in a few days, you can just buy it and be happy with it or not". (These are the same people who on Tuesday couldn't tell me when the phone would come in or what the specs were .. go figure).

Decided to have a look at Phones4U and had a great chat about the phone and a nice play with the demo model. The staff was pretty patient and helpful. So that helped push the balance. Pretty much bought it there and then and been happier than a kid in a candy shop on Christmas ;) .. yes major nerdgasm :D

It's an unbranded phone, in black .. although it was a tough call because the white phone surely doesn't look bad at all. (contract with orange), software version 1.26.401.2

Software version is 1.26.061.5, what's yours craftycarper? Unbranded follow the format x.xx.401.x.

Mine is 1.26.401.2

Cut my Orange sim card to use until i get the PAC code and it works so the phone is also unlocked.

Got to say as well, i'm glad i went with the grey, it looks good, if i would have got white it would have been grubby as hell within days i think.

Can't wait to hear your battery review!

I have to say, even for the initial discharge (I find lithium batteries get better after a few cycles), I'm impressed. 15 hours in, I have 3 hours screen on time, a 20 minute call, a 20 min journey in the car using maps/GPS and about half an hour of using the camera for vids/pics etc and I'm down to 25%.

What's impressed me most battery wise is the companion cube core. i think if idle, this thing would last for days. It was at 34% when I went to bed last night, and I lost 3% in 8 hours. For reference, my slightly underclocked and undervolted DHD would lose double that.

GPS seems weird, it's fine if you're actually travelling, but if you stop at traffic lights/junctions, it doesn't seem to like that and it throws a bit of a wobbly. Other than that, it picks up a signal in seconds.

I think I remember reading about that. Is that the 5th core that keeps only the essentials running and shuts down the other 4 cores? In lieu of advances in battery tech, this could be a game changer.

That's the one, it certainly seems like it's making a big difference (well, in my half a days worth of my very scientific & extensive testing :p). We'll see how things pan out though. I'm loving this phone!

EP, I need a favor.

When you say that GPS throws a wobbly - can you translate that to American for me? :)

At that point, how was the sky view? Obstructed by buildings or terrain? Cloudy, sunny?

Hi,

First time poster so if I appear ignorant please excuse me.

I have always been an iPhone person from day one but have decided that a change is necessary and have taken the Android plunge and got myself a HTC One X.

I got mine from CPW, UK and unlike the above experience found them to be really helpful (Probably as I know the manager). I got my hands on the One X the same day as the staff did for their familiarisation and after a few minutes decided to purchase one outright. Traded in my 4S and got a bit of discount and ended up paying

Apologies bro, I thought that was a term used on both sides of the Atlantic. In generic terms, it would just mean goes a bit crazy. In relation to the GPS, I meant when we stopped, the map/directional arrow would rotate, as if we were changing direction, it would start recalculating routes, tell us we were going the way etc. Seconds after we started moving again, it would correct itself. No idea if that's normal Maps behaviour, the only Android GPS I can compare it too is the DHD and that was terrible.

There was a clear view of the sky, a little cloudy, no sun as it was 10PM ish.

Hi Paul, welcome to AF (love the avatar) :).

Are you connected to 3G or WiFi predominantly? Where you can, connect to wireless as it's not as heavy on the battery as 3G. It's a bit of a pain, but what helps me is when not connected to WiFi, rather than have the phone connected constantly to 3G, switch to a 2G connected (Settings -> Mobile Networks -> GSM Only). You'll still get email notifications etc, but you'll need to switch back to GSM/WCDMA auto if you want to browse with any decent speed.

Browser wise, Dolphin is ok, I used it for ages but now I switch between Boat Browser HD and the Chrome Beta.

If you're looking for just a clock, something like clockr? It's quite stylish and when I'm not using the standard HTC clock, that's what I use. There are some in built clocks if you want to check them out. Long press an area of the screen, select widget and you'll be able to scroll through the list of available HTC Widgets, there are a few nice clocks there.

I always found using a launcher didn't really have any impact on battery life. Whilst they're a bit more customisable than Sense is, you lose the ability to use the HTC widgets and that was a no go for me.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I may give the Chrome Beta a try, I actually like the Sense UI, and the 4 x 1 clock weather, but I would prefer it without the weather.

I am predominatenly on 3G whilst at work but at home am constantly on Wifi.

Am i able to change the icon look if using the Sense UI or would I need to go for a different Launcher.

Thanks again

One of the available clocks is without the weather, it's just called Digital Clock. If you don't like that, there's a tonne of good clocks on the market if you search using the term "Flip Clock". If you're willing to pay for stuff, look at the likes of HD Widgets or Beautiful Widgets

You can't change the icons without trying an alternative launcher either unfortunately.

Chrome is good, I use it at home and it syncs up bookmarks and stuff between my laptop, tab and phone which is great.

Yeah being an apple boy and using the cloud i like things that i can change on the Mac and it syncs to the phone. Just downloaded Chrome, signed in, imported my bookmarks, opened it on the phone and they are there!! Perfect.

I found the 2x1 digital clock, placed it on the bottom row between my fav and games folder.

Another question... what is a good music player? Is the HTC Sense one any good?
