I have found a cool, justifiable, use for it. It's not the taking of photos and the sharing that is good (There's only so many things you can do with close ups of flowers, kittens and cleavage shots

) but the ability to search an event via the hashtags and see "normal" peoples pictures of interesting world events.
The example that I'm going to use is the recent last flight of the Discovery Space Shuttle. It flew low over Washington, doing a few laps. Now you could see pictures on the news etc but they were all the professional shots, the ones with immense camera lenses and the ones from the helicopters and stuff. All very nice BUT I got more enjoyment from normal folk, taking a photo from their garden as it flew overhead, or people who had stopped by the roadside and took a few shots.
Unlike Flickr and all those other photo websites, it is not populated by professional or semi professional types, it's just the likes of me and you posting pictures of everyday stuff. I find it facinating that someone in Australia would find a picture of my old Impreza interesting and a woman in Florida who likes a picture of my dog jumping into a river.
So in summary, it's not the filters and photo editing that is the selling point. It's not, as many have said, there are plenty of better photo editors out there for Android. What this brings to the party is a MASSIVE photobank of interesting things that you can browse and get involved with the person who took the photo. You don't have to be mates or anything but if you like the shot and just want to say "Wow" or ask a question about it, Instagram is really rather good
