I hear it is possible to update an HTC Hero on Telus with the update that came out for Sprint. Does anyone know if that is possible?

Short answer, no. You can not update your phone with the official sprint update.

Long answer. There are custom roms based off of the Sprint 2.1 update that were tweaked to work on the GSM Hero that you can install, but you have to downgrade/root to do so. Taiwan has already got the official 2.1 for GSM and there are now custom ROMS based off of this update that are much better than the sprint ports.
