Root Installing a custom kernel?

I've searched around but found NOTHING on how to install a custom kernel.
I read a really vague post about naming the zip to update.zip, putting it on the root of the sd card and then flashing it in recovery mode, is this how you do it?

No need to call it update.zip.


That is how you flash it. After you've done a checksum of course.
