Root installing a custom rom onto my wildfire

hi, i am having trouble installing any custom roms onto my rooted 2.2.1 htc wildfire. i try to boot into recovery and it comes up with an image of a phone with a red symbol that looks like a warning symbol, can anyone help me pleas? thanks in advance.

I had that u need to wipe the various folders and reset to factory then install the mod.
I thought I had bricked mine and nearly had an heart attack
