Yes, Titanium backup first to backup your apps then the nandroid backup, then wipe the phone then put in your new rom. After you reboot with your new rom don't do what I did and reinstall HTC sense stuff because your phone won't reboot after. Another thing you should do beforehand is partition your sd card esp if you have a desire. I haven't and I'm having problems with lack of space on the phone ( I still haven't got the balls to do the partition yet!)

partition sd card ? only have a 4gb card in phone. do i need to buy a new card ? got about a gig left on it .

will d/lowd titanium back up now and see what to do

Read the guides - all of them :)

You only need to partition the card if you wish to use a2sd+, i.e. move apps to an ext-format partition on the SD card. That is a very effective way of increasing your space though. Even a half-gig partition will probably be plenty if you just want to move apps - it's only if you want to run certain ROMs that you really need a big partition (since some ROMs, such as the Sense 2.1 or 3.0 ones, are too big to fit on the Desire so live partly on the ext partition).

Though larger cards don't cost very much these days, so that's always an option.

okmthanks for that.
just downloaded titanium. do i just back up the apps i have downloaded or all the htc stuff as well ??
will read all again

In TB, use the preset "Backup all new apps & newer versions".
When restoring, use the preset "Restore missing apps with data".

I'm in the same boat, I've rooted and now want to flash a rom (Redux specifically). The whole backing up thing has me confused

I'm thinking the process should be something like this:
Take Titanium Backup
Back up SMSs etc
Take Nandroid Backup
Copy SD card contents to PC
Format SD card
Partition SD card with an EXT partion after the FAT one
Perform a wipe
Flash the rom
Copy desired contents of SD card back onto card
Restore Titanium backup

It's the restoring of the titanium backup that confuses me - won't this be lost in the wipe? Or do I need to copy it across to my PC, and then reinstall Titanium after installing the rom, and copy the backup back onto my phone?

If someone could confirm my understandings are correct I'd be very appreciative.

Firstly, you can copy the SD contents back straight after the partitioning, before wipe or flash.

Secondly, you are quite right: wiping will delete Titanium. But the backup is stored on SD (which is not affected by the wipe), so after installing the ROM you reinstall Ti from the market, then use it to restore missing apps (but not system data). Then you can use your restored apps to restore SMS etc (also backed-up to SD).
