Help installing apk file

Hi. I just downloaded swype for my ally and the file is an .apk file. How do i install this? If i click on it from the browser downloaded list it says that this video can not be played. It must think it is a video file. So how can i install it? Thanks in advance!

If you don't already have ASTRO file manager, download it from the Market. Make sure you go to Settings>Applications and check the Unknown Sources option. After that, just click on the file you want to install and you should be able to make it happen.

If for some reason you can't use Astro (it won't download for me for some reason) you can use the terminal emulator (if you don't have that, it's free in the market)

1. Place the desired app on the root of your SD card
2. Launch Terminal Emulator
3. Type "su"
4. Type "sys -rw"
5. Type "cat /sdcard/example.apk > /system/app/example.apk" (where "example.apk" is the name of your apk)
6. Type "sys -ro"

Note: These steps were taken from Trident's Velocity 0.3 ROM thread
