Installing .apk

Long story short, i want to re install stock E-mail app. Deleted amongst other bloatware when flashed ROM. Don't have it in a backup on handset and am after a way to install rather than flashing ROM?

I've extracted the email.apk file from the ROM and tried installing, installing through file manager and somehow made it into a .zip so I could install through recovery mode but all have failed

I have googles, etc but nothing has worked thus far.

What am I missing/doing wrong??

Try just copying the, unzipped, .apk to your external SD card and navigate to it with your file explorer and just click on it. It should offer you the option to install.

Yeah thats what I thought. Tried that with Astro & ES file explorers last night. It comes up with install option but after starting just says application not installed?

Plan B. After a nandroid backup, try copying and pasting the email.apk into /system/app with permissions rw-r--r--, and then reboot. Might work.

I thought of this also last night but, and I've had this before, couldn't find /system/spp in the folders!! I'll try it again now and I don't understand the permissions bit, sorry. Do I have to edit anything for that?

Managed to solve it! Found /system/app by fluke and it wouldn't let me move Email.apk because the ES Explorer's settings werent checked for Root Explorer. As soon as I did this, .apk moved fine and is up & running, so far so good!

Out of interest, what is the permissions bit you mentioned as I didn't see or have to change anything by looks of it.

Cheers for your help :thumb:

Navigate to the.apk in es explorer then long press, properties, and click the change button next to permissions

I have it up & running now, as per last post.
I now see the permissions bit, it shows rw-rw-rw? What is this for?

I would imagine rw stands for read/write. I know to use root explorer and copy/cut and to paste files to and from my System folder (for example) I need to change it's permissions from R/O (read only ?) to R/W (read/write). I also know that doing copy and pasting and messing with system files can seriously upset your GS2, thank heavens for Nandroid backups, the saviour of amateur tinkerers like me.
